Fatal Attraction in London

First the film, now the stage adaptation

In a brand new version of the 1987 classic, this play has been adapted by the writer of the original screenplay, James Deardon. And there’s another treat is in store for keen theatre lovers… the multi-award winning and highly respected Trevor Nunn directs. Add production by Theatre Royal Haymarket Productions, Robert Fox and Patrick Ryecart, and you can’t really go wrong.

The adaptations made by James Deardon for the stage version of this excellent thriller are under wraps for now, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be a real emotional rollercoaster ride

Fatal Attraction - The story

The 1987 film starred Glenn Close and Michael Douglas. It was a huge hit, caused all manner of scandal at the time and gave rise to the ‘Bunny Boiler’ - the woman who just won’t take ‘no’ for an answer.

The plot stars the wealthy, successful New York lawyer Dan Gallagher, a man with everything: a great job, an adoring wife, lovely kids… and tragically, an inability to resist when a beautiful woman crosses his path.

Just one weekend of passion is all it takes for Alex Forrest to become obsessed with Gallagher. And what he thought was a mere fling turns into something much, much more dangerous, even life threatening. He’s in danger, his family is in danger and their pet rabbit is probably in the most danger of all!

Who knows whether the famous rabbit scene remains in the newly-adapted stage production. But with or without it, it’s a salutary tale that’ll have you on the edge of your seat. The word on the streets is that the Gallagher character was made more of a Mr Nice for the movie and the Forrest character even more obsessive and dysfunctional. Will the balance be redressed for the stage show? Who knows. You’ll have to wait and see. But whatever happens, it’s a clear case of ‘thriller lovers, walk this way’!

Who is the show suitable for?

Definite adult themes mean the show isn’t suitable for youngsters.

Great central performances from 6 speaking roles and a real intensity created in the first act. Beautiful and efficient design but still far too many scenes. Nunnery directs with great professionalism but I think this piece is essentially flawed by sticking to a very cinematic structure rather than focussing on a few scenes with the main characters to tell the story. Ending essentially loses the shock impact of the original film and the whole thing seemed to run out of steam towards the end. Terrific lighting and quite fun overall but lacking credibility in the second half.

Understudy needs to study

We saw the Saturday matinee in which the lead role was played by the understudy, who was just dreadfully awful. Clearly inexperienced, very nervous, and overacting. A refund would have been suiting,

Deceitful

Quality of seating very very poor. I have backache and the design and legroom was very poor leading to pain in my back due to poor posture. Very difficult to get out of seats if not in the aisle seat. Acting was poor quality with lillte passion and soul. It was very repetitive and slow. Not very scenic. Not very dramatic at all.

Disappointing

If you've seen the film then I think you will be disappointed. You need top class actors when trying to recreate a great film and I don't think the acting was top class

We choose 3 or 4 shows per year and this was right up with our favourite. The acting was excellent and the set was unbeliveably good. All in all I'd give this 6 stars out of 5 if I could.
