Good People in London

Starring:

Imelda Staunton, Lloyd Owen

Good People – An intelligent, stylish new play

What’s your definition of goodness? Good People makes you re-evaluate your feelings more or less continually as the main protagonists, Margie and Mike, play on your sympathies. Just one reason why this splendid play has caused such a stir, starting off in 2011 in New York and arriving here, at last, after a long and successful tour of the US and a sell-out stint at the Hampstead theatre.

In a production that has been called ‘assured’ and ‘stylish’, the producer Jonathan Kent has created something very special indeed. Imelda Staunton and Owen Lloyd take full advantage, riding the wave to create a masterpiece of a play that audiences just can’t get enough of.

Good People - The story

Brassy and bossy, a real character, feisty single mother Maggie lives in poor, downtrodden South Boston. She’s trapped on the wrong side of the tracks, on the edge of poverty and desperate to escape. When she loses her job she’s faced with some very difficult choices. What can she do to hold house and home together for her kids?

When she hears her ex Mike is back in town, having done very nicely for himself, she grabs the opportunity and decides to contact him. And when she does, backing him into a corner, the results are totally unexpected.

Mike’s selective memory, his regal wife’s contributions, Margie’s close friends’ cynicism, it all results in a well-presented and intelligent look at the meaning of being ‘good’. You’ll find yourself asking time and time again, who, exactly, are the good people?

The dialogue between the cast sparkles with originality, fresh and real. Jean, played by Lorraine Ashbourne, and the landlady Dottie, played by June Watson, are delightful to behold, hilariously sassy. Margie’s line manager at work, Stevie, played perfectly by Matthew Barker, contributes to the show’s unifying good/bad theme. And the show’s designer, Hildegard Bechtler, has devised some enthralling solutions to portraying life on both sides of the tracks, right and wrong. Clever stuff.

If you though there was no such thing as class snobbery in the USA, this production will prove a real eye opener. By the look of it, these days they’re much more of a class-led society than we are.

Simple but Deep

This story started as funny and interesting. The second part changed this to real life issues and emotions. part of me wished it could have continued, but on reflection there was nowhere else for it to go. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to all adults.

Fun in the West End

You have to like the American accents. It is very well acted with a lot of humour. Imelda Staunton is excellent as are the other actors.
