Neville's Island in London

Neville's Island – On the London stage for the first time in two decades

The popular comedy Neville's Island is on in the West End for the first time in twenty years, having wowed audiences at the Chichester Festival. The production transfers to the magnificent Duke of York's Theatre in October 2014, starring funny men Adrian Edmondson, Miles Jupp, Neil Morrissey and Robert Webb. What a cast!

Neville's Island - The story

The play tells the sorry tale of four unfit middle managers sent on a Lake District team building exercise that goes wrong right from the start.

The men are utterly out of their depth... and it shows. Neville, Gordon, Angus and Roy are expecting an ordinary, reasonably challenging outbound team building weekend. But when they tackle orienteering, everything goes pear shaped. A slapstick nightmare ensues when the team's boat hits the rocks, stranding them on a lonely island in the centre of a deep, freezing cold lake.

The first people ever to be shipwrecked inland, the unfortunate men soon realise they're not equipped for life in the great outdoors. And the cracks soon begin to show. Team captain Neville does his best to be practical and remain objective, but fails miserably and descends into caustic cruelty. Poor Roy, recovering from a breakdown, takes refuge in prayer. And chilled-out Angus is driven to violence by Gordon's constant harping.

Their attempts at teamwork are lamentable... and extremely funny. Everything they do backfires with hilarious results and the situation, while side-splitting, drives the 'team' to the very brink of disaster.

When they're eventually rescued by a helicopter, they realise the events on the island have changed them forever, and there's no going back.

The production is directed by the Chichester Festival's Angus Jackson and produced by Jamie Hendry Productions. Following its first West End appearance in 1994, the play was nominated for an Olivier Award. And Tim Firth's book has also been adapted for TV in a popular production starring Timothy Spall and Martin Clunes.

Acting was great, scenery was believable,on a cold island it was incredibly hot in the auditorium which distracted from the stage.

Disapppointing

Booked this show at the last minute to compliment a day in London. The plot sounded just what we wanted from an afternoon of entertainment. As described, fun and hilarious, I just wonder who actually wrote that description. Otherwise great actors delivered a weak offering of lame jokes and pathetic situations. A regular theatregoer I did something I have never done and left during the interval. Not sure I'll be able to persuade my husband to accompany me to the theatre ever again!
