Relative Values in London

Relative Values – Snobbery, stuff upper lips and Hollywood glamour

Noel Coward had been busy entertaining the troops and during World War Two, and hadn’t written a comedy play since Blithe Spirit in 1941. He was concerned that his legendary pre-war "gay insouciance" was no longer what people wanted. Then, right at the start of a new direction in Coward’s career, just as he opened his first cabaret show at the Café de Paris, he put his acerbic pen to paper again and came up with Relative Values, marking his return to comedy.

Now it’s back after a sell-out run at the Theatre Royal Bath, a proving ground which has sent many productions London-wards. Here’s the deal: three of Britain’s best loved comedy performers unite to create a truly glittering revival of Coward's naughtily funny portrayal of the clashing cultures between 1950s Hollywood glamour – which in the stiff upper lip world of the English aristocracy isn’t really ‘the done thing’ – and one particularly posh family.

The marvellous Olivier Award winner Patricia Hodge joins Leigh Zimmerman, comedian Caroline Quentin and funny man Rory Bremner. Ben Mansfield, best known for his appearance in ITV’s Primeval and the National Theatre's comedy One Man, Two Guvnors, joins them. Trevor Nunn directs, designs are by Stephen Brimson-Lewis, lighting by Tim Mitchell and sound by Fergus O’Hare, with the assistance of music consultant Steven Edis.

Relative Values - The story

Things become somewhat tense at Marshwood House when the young Earl tells his aristocratic family he’s determined to marry a Hollywood film actress. Everyone is uneasy, but they take the news with good grace. Until, to their consternation, it is revealed that the glamour puss’s long lost big sister is none other than his mother’s maid, Moxie. It’s deeply, horribly embarrassing. But the family does their best to cope in their own strange way, dressing Moxie in her ladyship’s old clothes in an attempt to pass her off as a fellow aristocrat.

Patricia Hodge plays Felicity, Leigh Zimmerman plays Miranda, Caroline Quentin plays Moxie, Rory Bremner plays the butler Crestwell and Ben Mansfield plays Don Lucas.

Trevor Nunn is one of Britain’s leading theatrical lights as well as a very successful movie and TV director. He knows how to weave a fine tale, getting the very best out of a story. He’s been Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, has directed massive stage hits including Lloyd Webber’s Cats and the fabulous Les Misérables, both of which won him well-deserved Tony Awards. He also generated considerable acclaim from critics and audiences alike for his work on Summerfolk, The Merchant of Venice, Troilus and Cressida and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.

Absolutely Relative Value

Absolutely brilliant but you have to keep your wits about you to keep up with the pithy script - could have been written for Patricia Hodge but she was just one of a superb cast.

Sadly we were unable to attend the performance as we had an intruder on our farm who smashed the cab of our tractor. We were not able to get to the theatre in time

Post War Saga

Excellent cast as we had expected. The pillars are a hinderence and if at all possible more elevation for row N onwards. Thought it might be worth thinking for Miranda to drop back to Cockney when exposed. Enjoyed the show enormously!

The plot and setting is now very dated but very interesting as a period piece. Superbly staged and acted

Excellent entertainment

Even if you are not familiar with Noel Coward's story, it is extremely easy to follow with nothing to dislike. There were no weak links, everyone played their parts superbly and the dry humour was a joy. Patricia Hodge was incredible and the whole production was sheer entertainment. If you want to just sit back and enjoy, then this is the one.

The Times They Were A-Changing

Noel Coward was widely known for his 'drawing room' comedies and the fun to be had at the expense of the foppish and the over priveleged. With 'Relative Values', set in 1951, the author seems to acknowledge that those days were coming to an end and a new (at least in theory) egalitarian Britain was emerging, determined to close the yawning gap between the classes. In this superbly enjoyable play, the lady of the manor is not only on friendly terms with her maid, but the two are actually friends and confidents, having been together for twenty years. Throw in a Hollywood starlet, a wonderfully knowing butler, an assortment of family and neighbours, mix with a dose of misunderstandings and false identities, and you have a wonderful evening of thoughtful fun. At the play's heart is the warm affection between the aristocrat and the humble servant - a harbinger of social change which Coward the master never fails to exploit with a jaundiced eye. We were fortunate to see Patricia Hodge, Caroline Quentin and Rory Bremner all in great form, but it's hard to see how 'Relative Values' could fail to please. Great fun.
