Skylight in London

Starring:

Bill Nighy, Carey Mulligan

Skylight– Can love really conquer everything?

The seriously talented Carey Mulligan makes her West End debut this summer in David Hare’s splendid observation of love under duress, Skylight. It also stars Matthew Beard and Bill Nighy, who take to the stage at Whydhams Theatre in early June for a revival of a play that won several awards and was nominated for many more back in the late 1990s.

Known and loved for being a genuinely compelling piece, it’s set to deliver a suite of epic performances. No surprise really, with such inflammatory subject matter: Can love survive everything, even the ravages of time, life and experience?

The show is directed by Stephen Daldry, who is no stranger to the West End and also makes great movies. His four films The Hours, The Reader, Billy Elliot plus Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close generated a grand total of 19 Academy Award nominations and two wins.

Skylight- The story

It is bitterly cold in London the night the young teacher Kyra Hollis gets a surprise visit from her former flame Tom Sergeant, older, wealthier and still charismatic. His wife has died recently and he’s keen to revive his love affair with Kyra, years down the line. She still feels something for him and they spend an evening together trying to rekindle the past in all its glory. The thing is, while their intentions are good, things have changed. The pair’s ideals and desires are completely different and they find themselves in extremely rough emotional waters – will their romance revive?

Bill Nighy is known and loved for superb performances in the films Love Actually, Notes on a Scandal and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. He’s equally well-respected for his stage work, including roles in the world premiere of another David Hare play, The Vertical Hour, on Broadway. Carey Mulligan has generated excitement and admiration in Inside Llewyn Davis, The Great Gatsby, An Education and more, and makes her London theatreland debut in Skylight. And Matthew Bear’s credits include An Education, One Day and The Look of Love.

David Hare has written an impressive twenty nine plays including Plenty, Racing Demon, Amy’s View, The Blue Room and The Judas Kiss. If you haven’t experienced one of his superb plays before, make this your first.

Brilliant Revival; as relevant as ever.

Premiered in 1995, this apparently slight 2 and a half-hander, is a subtle and funny examination of our obsession with goals and targets at the expense of living proper. The acting is superb; we all know Bill Nighy walks on water, but Carey Mulligan is both awesome and humane. Must see.

Brilliant view

Sad but uplifting. From 1990s but some of the issues even more relevant in the rampant arch conservatism of today.

Stunning performances!

It's nice to see famous actors living up to their billing. Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan are terrific in this clever play about a couple trying to rekindle past passions despite overwhelming differences in their circumstances.

Do not miss this play

Superb acting from all 3 actors. David Hare's Skylight is a must see piece. For adults and older teenagers. It is raw, honest and guides you through love, loss and the different way it affects all three.
