Wealthy friend to the rich and powerful, patron of the arts, ostentatious host, Timon of Athens showers gifts and hospitality on the city's elite. He vastly outspends his resources but, finding his coffers empty, reassures his loyal steward that all will be well.
When he calls upon his erstwhile associates, instead of offering help, they hang him out to dry. After a final, vengeful banquet, Timon withdraws to a literal and emotional wasteland, living off roots and pouring ever more surreal curses on a morally bankrupt Athens.
Simon Russell Beale takes the title role in Shakespeare's strange fable of conspicuous consumption, debt and ruin, written in collaboration with Thomas Middleton.

Simon Russell Beale really makes it
This is an excellenmt production of a very poor but interesting play. I think Shakespeare did not complete it. The Director has made the most of it. I particularly liked the way he made the inevitable walk-on and walk off parts of the show - usually excruciating - really interesting. Simon R B's performance was a triumph. I also thought the costumes were very clever.

Talia's musings on Timon of Athens
This is not the easiest Shakesperian piece to watch. It is highly poignent to today and is set in 21st century credit crunch times. The acting is fantastic the staging very clever and it is highly thought provoking. The first Act is well structured the second Act does not hang together so well which is not surprising for a play that is not supposed to be finished. Despite this it is a highly enjoyable and entertaining although not the most spiritually uplifting play.
