Merchant of Venice description

Director Abigail Graham shines candlelight on Shakespeare's complex exploration of prejudice, patriarchy and capitalism in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

In a society that exploits minorities to keep the majority in power, identity is everything.

When ostracised Jewish moneylender, Shylock, chases a debt he is rightfully owed, it exposes the fault lines of a culture built on religious and moral hypocrisy.

The Merchant of Venice, is Shakespeare’s complex exploration of prejudice, patriarchy and capitalism. Director Abigail Graham, brings together the personal and political in this re-imagining of Shylock’s play.

Colourful and creative

I was disappointed with the portrayal of Shylock. I found the volume of the music drowning the speech. I loved the Casket Opening scenes. Very apt and imaginative.

outstanding and powerful

The theatre has been created to imitate the theatres of Shakespeare's time, with the effect of candlelight. It was very compelling and added to the enjoyment of the play. The acting was excellent. Altogether an unforgettable evening.
