The Merchant of Venice in London

The Merchant of Venice 1936 tickets are available now!

The Merchant of Venice 1936 heads into London after a sell-out production at The RSC. Shakespeare's classic comedy about love, money, prejudice, and social justice has been set in 1930s Britain and is heading to the Criterion Theatre for a limited season from 15 February. Directed by Brigid Larmour, The Merchant of Venice 1936 is set in a time where the threat of fascism grows day by day and has been hailed by The Telegraph as "Theatre history".

About The Merchant of Venice 1936

Starring Tracy-Ann Oberman as Shylock, a resilient single mother and hard-working businesswoman who is desperate to protect her daughter's future. A charismatic merchant Antonio, played by Raymond Coulthard, comes to her for a loan to help his friend. But Antonio cannot repay the loan and now Shylock demands a pound of his flesh.

Having wowed audiences at the Watford Palace, RSC’s Stratford Upon Avon Swan Theatre, HOME Manchester and London’s Wilton’s Music Hall, this is a fresh take on the Bard’s classic, set in a 1930s London on the edge of political unrest as fascism rises in Europe.

Raymond Coulthard of Emmerdale and Hotel Babylon fame also plays the role of Arragon. Hannah Morrish (Antony and Cleopatra, Father Brown) plays Portia, and Gavin Fowler (Henry V, King Lear) plays Bassanio.

Jessica Dennis (The Habit of Art) is Mary and Nerissa Grainne Dromgoole from Romeo and Juliet is Jessica. Xavier Starr (The Mechanicals Presents… Macbeth or Julius Caesar) plays Gratiano and Alex Zur, also no stranger to Shakespeare, plays Yuval, the Duke, Balthasar, and a member of the Blackshirts, the British Union of Fascists. Nancy Farino plays Stefania / Blackshirt.

The creative team is also serious talented: Annabel Arden is Associate / Movement Director. Costume and Set Design is by Liz Cooke, Lighting Design by Rory Beaton, Sound Design by Sarah Weltman and Video Design by Greta Zabulyte. The Composer is Erran Baron Cohen.

Fabulous performance

Fabulous adaptation of Shakespeare's play. Very enjoyable and humorous at times

MoV with a v interesting and disturbing twist. Set in 1936 in London when Fascism was taking hold

A clever interpretation of MoV with Oberman taking the lead as Shylock which was a brilliant. I did enjoy the play v much, even though its not an easy watch. Rather too many chimes of the background to the story with events in the world today. Sadly. Plus ca change.....
