Stranger Things: The First Shadow in London
If you've loved the Netflix TV series Stranger Things, you'll adore this. The US science fiction horror drama series is being produced for the stage, a prequel that makes a nostalgic nod to 1980s sci-fi. The word on the streets is that it's going to be just as great as the series that earned literally dozens of Emmy nominations, including three for Outstanding Drama.
About Stranger Things: The First Shadow
Welcome to Stranger Things: The First Shadow , a stage play based on the Netflix Original Series which acts as a prequel to the series itself, a brand new story. Produced by Sonia Friedman's production company along with Stephen Daldry and Netflix, the premiere takes place in late 2023 at the West End's Phoenix Theatre. The plot takes place back in 1959, revealing a young Jim Hopper and Joyce Maldonado as they handle the shadows of the past.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow is written by Kate Trefry and Jack Thorne, inspired by the original Duffer Brothers story and Directed by Stephen Daldry.
The co-director is Justin Martin and there's already a class act of a production team in place. The set design is by Miriam Buether, the costume design by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, and lighting design by Jon Clark. The sound design comes from Paul Arditti, and the illusions design and visual effects come from Jamie Harrison and Chris Fisher. The video design and visual effects come from 59 Productions, and movement direction is by Coral Messam.
Wigs, hair and make-up design comes from Campbell Young Associates, the casting is by Charlotte Sutton CDG, and the international casting consultancy by Jim Carnahan. The technical director is Gary Beestone fo Gary Beestone Associates, and the rest of the creative team is to be announced - as is the cast.
What's the plot of Stranger Things: The First Shadow ?
The plot whisks us to the town of Hawkins. The year is 1959. It's an ordinary town - or is it? Jim Hopper's car won't start, Bob Newby's sister won't take his radio show seriously, Joyce Maldonado is keen to graduate from high school and get out of town. Everything seems normal. But a new student, Henry Creel, arrives, it turns out that the shadows of the past are closer than anyone thinks. Much closer.
The brilliant story is supported by an equally brilliant multi-award-winning team, who are creating a dazzling new adventure to bring you back to the time everything began - and might just hold the key to the secret at the very end of the Stranger Things story. The resulting play is scary, surprising and heartfelt, with lots of fresh new characters as well as those you're familiar with. Welcome to the Upside Down.

Perfect splendid!A great watch! Good casting, amazing actors and great special effects. For me the story line could have been a bit better (I’m a HUGE Stranger Things fan) and related to the series, but overall I’m happy.

Cool effects, story at the beginning to slowThe story developed very slowly at the beginning and could have come to the point quicker. Cool effects. Not suitable for children or people who are frightened quickly.

This is my second time of watching this show. I enjoyed it apart from the constant rotating head in front of me that kept leaning his head left than right as if he was plugged into the mains.

A must see even if you know nothing about The Stranger ThingsAn excellent theatre experience from start to end. Nothing classic, all the decors and the acting was marvellous. Phoenix theatre on the other hand should renew the seatings as they were really uncomfortable. And a very important tip: please be careful while selecting your seats as the first 4 or 5 rows at the stall area were not a good choice to watch. And bear in mind that the restrooms are really crowded during the break.

Brilliant play - a definite 'must see'I am an avid theatre goer and loved this play. I am a 62 year old female and took my granddaughter for her 16th birthday. I watched all the episodes of Stranger Things with her so this was an excellent present. My overall experience was excellent and would highly recommend this play. The theatre is lovely and all the staff were very friendly

Creative set use and fab actingVery entertaining and quite a few scares. Prob not suitable for under 12s or sensitive teens - bit of swearing, sex talk and some very gruesome bits. Wonderful for everyone else. The cast were brilliant, us (2 adults and our teenage son) were enthralled throughout. We had forgotten lots of the stranger things tv details but it didn’t matter. Most people on their feet clapping at the end, the set design/engineering/effects were unbelievable- was blown away!

Impressive innovative use of the theatre. Lovely staff.Second half lacked the narrative drive and clarity of the first half. Henry actor was extraordinary. I was frightened at the threat he posed in the first half. The doctor part had unrealised potential I thought...both script and acting...think Cillian Murphy in Batman...overall a striking piece of theatre
