Intermission Youth to present Darren Raymond's JULIUS CAESAR REMIXED

Like Tartuffe (Remixed), this adaptation reimagines Shakespeare's classic Roman tragedy Julius Caesar into a contemporary setting, blending iambic pentameter with street slang. Taking place in a modern secondary school, the play explores the harrowing realities of knife crime, postcode rivalries, and real-life tragedies, with Shakespeare's text reframed as a play-within-a-play. As the students rehearse, the lines between performance and reality blurs, leaving them questioning whether young people can successfully rewrite history or whether they're doomed to repeat it.

This production will be the public debut of a talented young cast selected from the latest cohort of young people who had participated in this year’s Intermission Youth drama training programme. It is directed by Stephanie Badaru, who first joined as  member of Intermission Youth’s inaugural 2008 cohort.

The creative team includes associate director Federay Holmes (Associate Artist at Shakespeare’s Globe); set and costume by 2021 Linbury Prize winner for stage design Ruth Badila; lighting design by Rajiv Pattani (Darkling by Actors Touring Company & Bush Theatre, Foal at Finborough Theatre); projection design by award-winning Cheng Keng (OFFIES Design winner for Loop 2025/26); and sound design by Intermission Youth Younger’s graduate Luka Burton mentored by Pierre Flasse (Finborough Theatre, Brixton House, Southwark Playhouse, Orange Tree Theatre). Six members of Intermission Youth’s cohort will also be joining the backstage team

Julius Caesar (Remixed) is one of 15 Shakespeare remixes written by Darren Raymond, recipient of The Globe Theatre’s Sam Wanamaker Award 2025. Reymond recently wrote and directed an adaptation of Moliere's Tartuffe, reimagined as Tartuffe (Remixed), which stars Mark Rylance in the titular role alongside graduates of Intermission Youth. Commenting on the production, Raymond said, "Shakespeare didn't write for elite audiences, his language was the raw street vernacular of his day. When you listen to the incredible rhythm, wordplay and lyrical sharpness used by today's youth, the poetic cadence matches the Elizabethans perfectly. This remix isn't about diluting the text, it's about unlocking its raw power."

Julius Caesar (Remixed) will play at Omnibus Theatre from 11 November to 5 December 2026.
