Enjoy Les Miserables, a moving tale of revolution
An astonishing fifty five million people have enjoyed Tony and Olivier Award winning Les Miserables so far, so you’ll be in good company. The show was named the nation’s favourite musical in a BBC poll, it’s one of the West End’s longest-running musicals and it has been thrilling audiences for a quarter of a century. That’s what we call popular!
If you’re new to Les Mis, as it’s affectionately called by fans, don’t be put off by the title. It’s dramatic and tense but there’s plenty of comic relief. Based on the popular Victor Hugo book, Les Miserables features music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, original text by Alain Boublil and extra material by James Fenton. Telling an epic story set against the dramatic backdrop of a country experiencing a bloody revolution, this superb adaptation thrills audiences and fills the theatre to bursting point every night.
Les Miserables - The story
Les Miserables weaves a dramatic, edge-of-your-seat tale of revolution and romance and has been entertaining audiences since its opening in Paris more than three decades ago. It tells the moving story of the rebellious but reformed character, Jean Valjean, a man who is tormented by a relentless police officer called Javert in 19th century Paris as the French revolution rages all around. It’s heart-breaking stuff, with romantic interest provided by the student Marius who falls deeply in love with Cosette. As Javert becomes ever more of a threat to the rebels, confrontations are inevitable. But love eventually triumphs despite everything...
‘The musical to end all musicals’
A surprising number of songs from Les Miserables have become hits in their own right, independent of the musical, and you’ll adore the show’s endless stream of beautiful ballads and moving anthems. The song Bring Him Home is a popular choice for funerals worldwide and songbird Susan Boyle has covered the tune I Dreamed a Dream to perfection. Empty Chairs at Empty Tables is absolutely heart-breaking, On My Own is guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes and Do You Hear the People Sing? is genuinely rousing and exhilarating stuff. Often labelled ‘The musical to end all musicals’, Les Miserables tickets are hot property and the production shows no signs of flagging in popularity as the decades roll by.

A fantastic view capturing the whole show. Would definitely see it again. Looking forward to my next show (Chicago in Melbourne this December!!)

Through it's beautiful and memorable music, Les Mis illustrates a glimpse into the life and times of early 19th century France. We thoroughly enjoyed the variety of the characters and their singing abilities. As well the set changes on the revolving stage. The lyrics continue to entertain us.

Wonderful as always. For those who have not read the book, do find it and read it if you are going to see this show. Prefered the casting of 2017 rather than 2019, especially Cosette, but apart from that just pure magic.

My 14th time – and it just gets better and better. Today was a matinee performance but it could’ve been for the royal family. Really, really excellent – how the cast can then build themselves up again, for an evening performance, I don’t know. Especially good today were both the Thénardiers. Also excellent performances for Javert and JVJ. Not to take anything away from every other member of the cast. A superb show.

This may the best performance I've seen. Dean Chisnell may be better as Jean Vajean than Colm Wilkinson, who I saw a couple decades ago on Broadway. The one thing preventing a perfect score was that despite spending several hundred pounds per ticket, we were told we couldn't have a program with cast listing and bios without paying another 5 pounds in cash. We didn't have pounds, so we didn't buy one and thus didn't know who we were watching. Maybe this is common practice in London, but is not only unseemly, but street vendor tacky.

Les Mis is a must-see. This classic should be number one on the bucket list of West End Shows to see. The story is classic with great themes of human strength, triumph over adversity. The story combines emotion with drama but also includes moments of humour, thanks to the landlord. The music is outstanding with many memorable songs. The staging is very cleverly worked and makes excellent use of a moving stage and lighting. The whole cast was outstanding, but special mention to a Dean Chisnall as a very strong Jean Valjean and Elane Skye as Eponine with a beautiful voice. The singing generally crisp and clear. This is really a fantastic production and everything you would expect of a great Musical production. It's no surprise that it has been running on West End for so many years.

Absolutely amazing piece of art. Jean Valjean actor: 5stars plus. Outstanding!!! We went in family (me, my husband, our daughters: 16 and 18 years-old). During the musical we went from tears to laugh out loud to tears back again. Never, ever, have I weeped in a musical before. Amazing!!! Great actors: Jean Valjean, Javert, Marius, Eponine, couple Thenardier Not as good: The leader of Les Amis... although a good-looking actor and with good voice, there was some missing corporal expression (maybe the actor was not in one of his better days, and if so, sorry for the critic) AMAZING disliked: Cosette should not be a white little girl and black grown up girl. Either white or black from begging to end, otherwise is difficult to create the same empathy when the change occurs. Many people were talking about that in the end.
