Les Miserables description

Enjoy Les Miserables, a moving tale of revolution

An astonishing fifty five million people have enjoyed Tony and Olivier Award winning Les Miserables so far, so you’ll be in good company. The show was named the nation’s favourite musical in a BBC poll, it’s one of the West End’s longest-running musicals and it has been thrilling audiences for a quarter of a century. That’s what we call popular!

If you’re new to Les Mis, as it’s affectionately called by fans, don’t be put off by the title. It’s dramatic and tense but there’s plenty of comic relief. Based on the popular Victor Hugo book, Les Miserables features music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, original text by Alain Boublil and extra material by James Fenton. Telling an epic story set against the dramatic backdrop of a country experiencing a bloody revolution, this superb adaptation thrills audiences and fills the theatre to bursting point every night.

Les Miserables - The story

Les Miserables weaves a dramatic, edge-of-your-seat tale of revolution and romance and has been entertaining audiences since its opening in Paris more than three decades ago. It tells the moving story of the rebellious but reformed character, Jean Valjean, a man who is tormented by a relentless police officer called Javert in 19th century Paris as the French revolution rages all around. It’s heart-breaking stuff, with romantic interest provided by the student Marius who falls deeply in love with Cosette. As Javert becomes ever more of a threat to the rebels, confrontations are inevitable. But love eventually triumphs despite everything...

‘The musical to end all musicals’

A surprising number of songs from Les Miserables have become hits in their own right, independent of the musical, and you’ll adore the show’s endless stream of beautiful ballads and moving anthems. The song Bring Him Home is a popular choice for funerals worldwide and songbird Susan Boyle has covered the tune I Dreamed a Dream to perfection. Empty Chairs at Empty Tables is absolutely heart-breaking, On My Own is guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes and Do You Hear the People Sing? is genuinely rousing and exhilarating stuff. Often labelled ‘The musical to end all musicals’, Les Miserables tickets are hot property and the production shows no signs of flagging in popularity as the decades roll by.

First musical we watched in the UK

We booked last minute tickets to Les Mis. Even though our ticket weren't the best in the house, we still enjoyed every second of it. We could see most of the stage and really didn't feel like we missed out on better seats. The vocals were incredible and the stage design was brilliant.

The show was brilliant , it was wife’s 50th birthday surprise, there was a few things, The staff walking about in out , there way a guy filming the staff did see him , and made a note of the seat number , but they where back and forth in first performance, the person in front of me restricted my view slightly, and the people slightly over to the left had crisps they must have been hungry it went on for a long time ,

LES MISERABLES -SONDHIEM THEATRE

MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS OPERA PERFORMANCE AND THE MUSIC WAS SUPERD ALONG WITH THE ACTORS. GETTING TO THE GRAND CIRCLE CAN BE A BIT CONFUSING BUT IF YOU GET LOSS IN TRYING TO FIND IT YOU CAN GET AN UNGUIDED TOUR OF THE THEATRE WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENED TO US,WE WERE TOLD TO GO UP THE STAIRS AND THEN TOLD TO GO DOWN THE STAIRS AND ENDED UP IN THE STALLS AND THEN TOLD TO GO TO THE FOYER AGAIN AND THEN TO GO UP THE STAIRS AGAIN - MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD STAND IN THE FOYER AND NOT AT THE FRONT DOOR AND TELL PEOPLE THE PROPER STAIRS TO TAKE!! BUT I LOVED THE WEE TOUR THAT WE TOOK, VERY INTERESTING AND LOVED IT, THE TOILETS CAN BE ALSO ANNOYINGLY DIFFICULT TO GET TOO GENTS ON ONE SIDE AND LADIES ON THE OTHER SIDE, IF IN THE CIRLCE YOU HAVE TO GO TOT THE TOP OF THE CIRCLE CROSS OVER THE BACK AND THEN DOWN THE STEPS AGAIN. BUT OVERALL A GREAT SHOW AND LOVED IT THANK YOU

The design of each scene was just amazing!

Geniunely I didn't expect it to be so good! I wish I have seen this show before, I loved the coloring, lighting, decoration of the stage and mostly the voice of the actors was somethingelse honestly, such an effort. I have seen so many London musicals, and this show now in one of my first 3 to suggest.

Unbelievably great show!

What a great, great show and suberb cast! After so many years (and I’ve seen the show many times in different counters since 1989) a show of such great quality is really phenomenal! The decor was a bit different (simpler) from earlier shows, but that’s probably due to the smaller theatre. It didn’t take anytjing off the really nice experience. The singing was extremely great! I had a set with ‘very restrictief view’ but I’d say: ‘slightly restricted’. Absolutely phenomenal and I recommend it to all lovers of serious musicals!

Always a joy...

Most recent visit, maybe the 5th time I have seen this show, the last time being more than 5 years ago. I think there have been a few very minor tweaks to the dialogue over the years but nothing detracts from the quality of the musical score and the ability of the production to generate empathy and sometimes humour. I didn’t consider that the show’s current home at the Sondheim Theatre (one of the smaller West End theatres?) constrained it in any significant way. For me the running time may be a shade over long but there's a reason it has endured as long as it has. It’s brilliant!

Loved the show. Grew up being part of musicals as my dad was a musician that played in the band. Suggestion 1. Did not know the story or the length of the show. Was not sure if the interval was an interval or the end of the show. People could make a mistake 2) small detail - when Epina died and was lifted up she actually lifted her torso up before she was lifted.

Hugo said once that if he only wrote for his time that he might as well break his pen in half. He was right. This story has a universal application. The singing and dancing was powerful and the acting was an emotional roller coaster. The Sondheim Theatre presents a magical experience for a wonderful, memorable play.

The essential London theatre ticket

For theatre lovers, Les Mis is as much a part of a London visit as seeing Big Ben. I’ve seen it 3 times over the past decade, and the cast and production values are always first-rate. The staging has become more imaginative and sophisticated, but the core stays true to the storytelling and makes for a powerful experience. Somehow, Les Mis always feels relevant…this time as Ukraine is under siege. The only drawback is the seating — surprisingly still old-fashioned uncomfortable and cramped seats with disappointing views, even from some of the priciest stalls.

The total restaging of the show has made it a brand new and much improved experience. I have seen the show 6 times and this was the very best performance and staging that I have seen because it brought out new ways of seeing the same scene that made it a totally new experience.
