Les Miserables description
Enjoy Les Miserables, a moving tale of revolution
An astonishing fifty five million people have enjoyed Tony and Olivier Award winning Les Miserables so far, so you’ll be in good company. The show was named the nation’s favourite musical in a BBC poll, it’s one of the West End’s longest-running musicals and it has been thrilling audiences for a quarter of a century. That’s what we call popular!
If you’re new to Les Mis, as it’s affectionately called by fans, don’t be put off by the title. It’s dramatic and tense but there’s plenty of comic relief. Based on the popular Victor Hugo book, Les Miserables features music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, original text by Alain Boublil and extra material by James Fenton. Telling an epic story set against the dramatic backdrop of a country experiencing a bloody revolution, this superb adaptation thrills audiences and fills the theatre to bursting point every night.
Les Miserables - The story
Les Miserables weaves a dramatic, edge-of-your-seat tale of revolution and romance and has been entertaining audiences since its opening in Paris more than three decades ago. It tells the moving story of the rebellious but reformed character, Jean Valjean, a man who is tormented by a relentless police officer called Javert in 19th century Paris as the French revolution rages all around. It’s heart-breaking stuff, with romantic interest provided by the student Marius who falls deeply in love with Cosette. As Javert becomes ever more of a threat to the rebels, confrontations are inevitable. But love eventually triumphs despite everything...
‘The musical to end all musicals’
A surprising number of songs from Les Miserables have become hits in their own right, independent of the musical, and you’ll adore the show’s endless stream of beautiful ballads and moving anthems. The song Bring Him Home is a popular choice for funerals worldwide and songbird Susan Boyle has covered the tune I Dreamed a Dream to perfection. Empty Chairs at Empty Tables is absolutely heart-breaking, On My Own is guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes and Do You Hear the People Sing? is genuinely rousing and exhilarating stuff. Often labelled ‘The musical to end all musicals’, Les Miserables tickets are hot property and the production shows no signs of flagging in popularity as the decades roll by.

Hugo said once that if he only wrote for his time that he might as well break his pen in half. He was right. This story has a universal application. For theatre lovers, Les Mis is as much a part of a London visit as seeing Big Ben. I’ve seen it 3 times over the past decade, and the cast and production values are always first-rate. The staging has become more imaginative and sophisticated, but the core stays true to the storytelling and makes for a powerful experience. Somehow, Les Mis always feels relevant…this time as Ukraine is under siege. The only drawback is the seating — surprisingly still old-fashioned uncomfortable and cramped seats with disappointing views, even from some of the priciest stalls.

The total restaging of the show has made it a brand new and much improved experience. I have seen the show 6 times and this was the very best performance and staging that I have seen because it brought out new ways of seeing the same scene that made it a totally new experience.

THE ONLY THING I WOULD COMMENT ON WAS THE LIGHTING WAS A LITTLE DARK AT TIMES DIFFICULT TO MAKE OUT THE CARICATURE PERFORMING. THE GUYS HAD MAGNIFICENT VOICES AND THE LADIES TO , I THOUGHT THAT THE LADY WHO PLAYED COSETTE WAS A LITTLE TIMID AND QUIET BUT SHE WAS SWEET BT MAYBE THAT WAS HER CARICATURE ,THE CHILDREN WHO PERFORMANCE WERE AMAZING , THANK-YOU ALL FOR A MEMORABLE EVENING

This musical was just wonderful … and we had the treat of the music being the whole thing as opposed to being just a few songs. . It made it a bit harder to follow and I was glad I had an idea of the main thrust of the story beforehand. But that just serves as a perfect excuse to go again and enjoy it all over again. From first arriving we were greeted professionally by masked ushers to obtain covid status and ticket allocation , to direct us to the correct entrance. Bar drinks had to be pre ordered and were bagged and named in bar area to save queues and waiting , Very efficient I noted . Seats were slightly view restricted, but I knew this upon purchase, and as they say you get what you pay for ! Although this was of very little inconvenience ,And did not deter from a thoroughly immersive and enjoyable performance from a wonderful and entertaining cast. Danny Tarpey

Grand circle D2 is detailed as restricted view but the placement if the actors quite frequently meant I saw nothing if what was happening on stage. They could have taken that into account and placed actors slightly more central & back to prevent lots of people trying to lean forward to try to see. This is not restricted view in my opinion. A slight barrier or post in the eye line is restricted view. Grand circle D2 is no view at all at times. Very disappointed that the shows placement of the actors at poignant moments was not more in view for all.

Les Misérables, arguably the best musical of the past 30 years and a juggernaut hit around the world, is going walk-about in the West End, and by the time it settles into its new home long term fans many not recognise it.
