About the Novello Theatre

In 1913 the Novello Theatre was called The Strand Theatre. Under that name it enjoyed its first long run with an Anglo-Chinese play called Mr Wu, starring the matinee idol Matheson Lang. It turned out to be his best-loved role, the one he was remembered for. Other past shows at the Novello Theatre include the 1923 production of Anna Christie, the first Eugene O'Neill play to be seen in the West End, which caused a sensation. Plus, before MAMMA MIA! arrived, Noises Off, Crazy For You, and Betty Blue Eyes.
