Amy Ng's Shanghai Dolls will premiere at the Kiln Theatre next spring.
The production takes a look at the untold story of two of the most influential women in Chinese history - Madame Mao and Sun Weishi - and how the personal truly is political. Shanghai Dolls follows what happens when two penniless actresses meet in Shanghai at auditions for Ibsen's A Doll's House. But as political upheaval rips through China, their tumultuous friendship will alter not only the course of their lives but the course of history. One of the women will become China's first female director whilst the other becomes the architect of the Cultural Revolution.
Ng will be joined by Katie Posner who will direct the production. The cast and the rest of the creative team will be announced soon.
Shanghai Dolls will run at the Kiln Theatre from 3 April - 10 May 2025.
