Could the West End be seeing a musical adaptation of beloved animated film Tangled in the near future? Disney recently confirmed that a stage adaptation is in active development.

The announcement came during an exclusive presentation at D23, where Disney Theatrical Group confirmed that a full-length theatrical musical is actively in development, with workshop readings and casting for workshop roles underway in New York.

Tangled is the 2010 Disney animated film based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Rapunzel, which starred Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi as Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder. The franchise includes two short films and a television series called Tangled: The Series. A live action adaptation is also in the process of being filmed, starring Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel.

The stage musical features a book by Julia Mattison, direction by Ashley Rodbro, and the original movie's score by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. During the D23 presentation, Menken offered a first listen of a new song written especially for the stage adaptation by himself and Slater. We know that alongside the animated film's score, the musical will feature three new original songs: 'Flower of Gold', 'When She Returns', and 'Wanted Man'.

A 50-minute abridged version, Tangled: The Musical, has been playing on the Disney Cruise Line since 2015, but this production would be an entirely separate, expanded project.

So when are we likely to see Tangled onstage? No official dates have been announced, but it's likely the musical would make its way to Broadway ahead of a West End transfer. Disney Theatrical Group is also currently focused on bringing its new stage adaptation of The Greatest Showman to the West End in spring 2027, so a Tangled run would likely follow after this if it went ahead.

If Tangled does make it to the West End, it will join a long-standing tradition of Disney theatrical productions that have played in London over the years, including Aladdin, Frozen, Hercules, and of course, The Lion King. These musicals have always been a surefire commercial success for Disney and a big hit with Disney fans who want to experience their favourite films through the magic of theatre - so we won't be surprised to see Tangled on the West End stage at some point in the next few years. Watch this space for more details and rumours as they unfold.
