Second Half Productions and Welsh National Theatre have announced that Michael Sheen and Callum Scott Howells will return to the West End in the first major revival of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus in over a decade. Amadeus will play in Cardiff and London's West End in 2027.

Artwork provided by production.

Peter Shaffer’s award-winning masterpiece recounts the rivalry between embittered court composer Antonio Salieri and musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In Vienna, 1820, the wildly successful Salieri meets the prodigy Mozart: vulgar, childish, and brilliant, with a gift so extraordinary that it can only be divine. Faced with a genius he can't rival and driven wild with jealousy, Salieri begins a dangerous obsession that threatens to consume both men, launching a calculated campaign to destroy the rival he both worships and despises. Fuelled by some of the greatest music ever written, Amadeus is an electrifying story of ambition, faith, and the unbearable cost of greatness - where talent battles genius, devotion turns to betrayal, and man dares to challenge God.

Salieri will be played by multi-award winning actor and director Michael Sheen (The Passion, Nye, Our Town), who returns to the West End for the first time since 2006's Frost/Nixon, while BAFTA Cymru winner Callum Scott Howells (It’s a Sin, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club) makes his role debut as Mozart. Sheen was the first major actor to perform both roles, having played Mozart in the West End and on Broadway (1998/1999) and Salieri at the Sydney Opera House (2022). Amadeus will see Sheen and Howells reunite for the first time since BBC drama The Way. It also marks the first time two Welsh actors have taken on the iconic roles in the same production. Further casting to be announced.

Amadeus will be directed by Jeremy Herrin, who recently directed Guess How Much I Love You and The Spy Who Came In From the Cold. It will feature set design by Olivier Award winner Bunny Christie with costume design by Lez Brotherston.

Amadeus will play at New Theatre Cardiff from 9 to 27 March 2027 ahead of a 16 week run at the Noël Coward Theatre in London’s West End from 17 April to 7 August.
