Oliver! in London
Starring:
Simon Lipkin
Living theatre legend Cameron Mackintosh takes to the driving seat for the latest version of the all-time classic Oliver! Now the latest adaptation of the story adored by millions is on the way to the West End once again following a summer season at the Chichester Festival Theatre. The musical has been totally reconceived with the help of director and choreographer Matthew Bourne.
Why you should book Oliver! tickets
- The musical inspired a 1968 film of the same name. The film itself won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture
- Oliver! heads back to London 15 years after its last revival at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2009
A delightful musical that thrills theatreland every time
Oliver! is based on the 1838 novel by Charles Dickens. The stage musical book, music and lyrics are by Lionel Bart, whose reimagining of the novel premiered at the Wimbledon Theatre in 1960. Audiences went wild and the show hit theatreland with a bang, enjoying a record-breaker of a run. 1963 saw Lionel Bart win the Tony Award for Best Original Score for his work. The show wowed Broadway then took off on a string of major London revivals: 1977 to ‘80, ‘94 to ‘98, 2008 to ‘11 plus a two year UK tour in 2011.
Whether you’ve seen the musical or movie before or not, you’ll recognise the songs. Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself and I'd Do Anything are classics, and they’re just the tip of the iceberg in an unforgettable score.
What is Oliver! about?
You’ll meet the orphaned Oliver Twist, who escapes the cruel Victorian workhouse he’s been sent to, hiding in London's underworld with Fagan the dodgy leader and his gang of young pickpockets. Will he ever find happiness? The Artful Dodger, Nancy, and the boy’s unexpected saviour weave an exciting story that never goes out of date.
The cast and creative team of Oliver!
The cast includes Simon Lipkin (Guys and Dolls, Avenue Q) as Fagin, Shanay Holmes (Miss Saigon, The Bodyguard) as Nancy, Aaron Sidwell (Henry VI, Wicked) as Bill Sikes, Billy Jenkins (Les Misérables, BBC's Dodger) as the Artful Dodger and Philip Franks (The Rocky Horror Show, Witness for the Prosecution) as Mr Brownlow.
With a sensational score in store and Matthew Bourne’s fresh choreography to look forward to, it’s tipped to be another West End smash. Bourne, Mackintosh and Sam Mendes (who also reimagined Swan Lake, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and Edward Scissorhands) originally reinvented Lionel Bart's classic in 1994 at the London Palladium, and again in 2009 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, upping the ante every time. This time around you can expect an intimate feel to the staging which has been ‘thrillingly designed’ by Lez Brotherston (Fiddler on the Roof, Me and My Girl, Flowers for Mrs Harris).
Oliver! is co-directed by Jean-Pierre Van Der Spuy with lighting design by Paule Constable and Ben Jacobs. The sound design is by Adam Fisher, video design by George Reeve, and the original orchestrations by William David Brohn are adapted by Stephen Metcalfe. The music supervision comes from Graham Hurman.
Prepare to experience one of the greatest musicals of all time as Oliver! makes a return to the West End, packed with a compelling narrative, iconic songs, and lively choreography.

Colorful, creative a must see!A dazzling show bursting with color and energy, driven by masterful performances both sung and acted. It’s impossible to resist the skilful staging, which brilliantly blends sparkling humor with moving depth, and the talent of the actors who bring these beloved characters back to life in a resolutely modern setting that never betrays our cherished memories.

Feel good showThe theatre is easy to find and is fresh . Air con really helped on this hot afternoon showing . Quick bag search and in . I booked the AA restricted seats …. They are restricted , you can only see half of the stage . So , the 6 of us had to lean across to see but it didn’t diminish the quality of the show . I am uncomfortable with some shows but this was engaging , great story , the children were synchronised and my 12 absolutely loved the musical accompaniment . Very professional .

FANTASTIC SHOWWe didn't think anything could top or match Le Miserable, how wrong we were! Oliver is absolutely brilliant, the story telling, the acting and the cast were 10/10. We cannot recommend this show enough, if your only thinking about seeing this show, then stop thinking about it and book, you will not be disappointed.

A polished performance with a few chilly drawbacksThe production impressed with its professional vocals, striking costumes, and a well-designed set that made the most of the intimate yet charming West End venue. However, the experience was let down somewhat by the freezing cold air conditioning, which was blowing throughout the entire performance and became quite uncomfortable. Musically, some of the songs felt slightly rushed, with tempos quicker than the originals, which made it harder for the emotional weight of the lyrics to come through. The portrayal of Bill Sykes lacked the intensity and menace the character demands—his voice and presence didn’t fully convey the fear he’s meant to instill. That said, it was still an enjoyable evening overall, particularly if you can get tickets at a reasonable price. The inclusion of original songs and the thoughtful staging made it a worthwhile watch.

Was not informed show start time had changed by either London Box Office or the theatre. Both had my email address and phone number. So arrived for 2.30 pm start as printed on my ticket and was informed show started at 2pm aTicket was printed with 2.30pm start. Arrived at 2.20 and was informed show began at 2.00pm, that we couldn’t enter until there was a break as it would spoil the show for others. We had O35 and O26 row end seats in stalls near an entry door so no one would have to move seats at all. We paid £236 for 2 stalls tickets that tickets and experience ruined. Missed signature Oliver solo song where is love. Came all the way from Cambridge. Theatre refused to change our seats to another day so we couldn’t go in see all the show. Both theatr and London Box office had my email address and phone number as both emailed review request email to me but neither informed me of earlier show started at 2pm. Very disappointed
