Oliver! in London
Starring:
Simon Lipkin
Living theatre legend Cameron Mackintosh takes to the driving seat for the latest version of the all-time classic Oliver! Now the latest adaptation of the story adored by millions is on the way to the West End once again following a summer season at the Chichester Festival Theatre. The musical has been totally reconceived with the help of director and choreographer Matthew Bourne.
Why you should book Oliver! tickets
- The musical inspired a 1968 film of the same name. The film itself won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture
- Oliver! heads back to London 15 years after its last revival at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2009
A delightful musical that thrills theatreland every time
Oliver! is based on the 1838 novel by Charles Dickens. The stage musical book, music and lyrics are by Lionel Bart, whose reimagining of the novel premiered at the Wimbledon Theatre in 1960. Audiences went wild and the show hit theatreland with a bang, enjoying a record-breaker of a run. 1963 saw Lionel Bart win the Tony Award for Best Original Score for his work. The show wowed Broadway then took off on a string of major London revivals: 1977 to ‘80, ‘94 to ‘98, 2008 to ‘11 plus a two year UK tour in 2011.
Whether you’ve seen the musical or movie before or not, you’ll recognise the songs. Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself and I'd Do Anything are classics, and they’re just the tip of the iceberg in an unforgettable score.
What is Oliver! about?
You’ll meet the orphaned Oliver Twist, who escapes the cruel Victorian workhouse he’s been sent to, hiding in London's underworld with Fagan the dodgy leader and his gang of young pickpockets. Will he ever find happiness? The Artful Dodger, Nancy, and the boy’s unexpected saviour weave an exciting story that never goes out of date.
The cast and creative team of Oliver!
The cast includes Simon Lipkin (Guys and Dolls, Avenue Q) as Fagin, Shanay Holmes (Miss Saigon, The Bodyguard) as Nancy, Aaron Sidwell (Henry VI, Wicked) as Bill Sikes, Billy Jenkins (Les Misérables, BBC's Dodger) as the Artful Dodger and Philip Franks (The Rocky Horror Show, Witness for the Prosecution) as Mr Brownlow.
With a sensational score in store and Matthew Bourne’s fresh choreography to look forward to, it’s tipped to be another West End smash. Bourne, Mackintosh and Sam Mendes (who also reimagined Swan Lake, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and Edward Scissorhands) originally reinvented Lionel Bart's classic in 1994 at the London Palladium, and again in 2009 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, upping the ante every time. This time around you can expect an intimate feel to the staging which has been ‘thrillingly designed’ by Lez Brotherston (Fiddler on the Roof, Me and My Girl, Flowers for Mrs Harris).
Oliver! is co-directed by Jean-Pierre Van Der Spuy with lighting design by Paule Constable and Ben Jacobs. The sound design is by Adam Fisher, video design by George Reeve, and the original orchestrations by William David Brohn are adapted by Stephen Metcalfe. The music supervision comes from Graham Hurman.
Prepare to experience one of the greatest musicals of all time as Oliver! makes a return to the West End, packed with a compelling narrative, iconic songs, and lively choreography.

Best musical seen for a long timeThe show was utterly fantastic. Staging was brilliant which enhanced the story telling. The acting was amazing with principal characters excelling in their craft but especially the children and younger members of the cast. The only negative was the lack of legroom in the theatre itself. I’m not overly tall but my legs were in pain from the lack of room.

Utterly wonderful! This was the best Oliver production I've ever seen. It was beautiful! Fagin stole the show. Or did Nancy? Or Dodger? Or the kids? Or little Oliver? Or the Bumbles? Or the Sowerberries? They were all so beautiful, mesmerizing and moving. What a gorgeous piece of theatre. I loved the ending - a vast improvement on Fagin ending up in jail. There was something so terribly moving about this Fagin. A fabulous interpretation. Thank you to everyone. You were all glorious.

Great Music and Performances... ButIt is great to appreciate all of the wonderful music in this show, and the individual character actors were strong, some of the minors were a real stand-out. I felt the production was a tad over-the-top at times - a bit of vaudeville, more than I think was needed. But, all-in-all well spent evening

Good, safe performance, NOT 5 star. The theatre itself was probably one of the smallest I have been in. I thought the show started slowly but grew into it after the interval as the classic songs (very well performed) gripped the audience more. During earlier parts I felt some low level sexual inuendo was not relevant and certainly not in keeping with the original story. In short a good, safe overall performance but nothing special.

Absolutely terrific productionThe overall production value was excellent as you would expect a Cameron MacIntosh production to be. Nancy had a magnificent voice. The dancing was superlative -- so all of the kids in the cast were terrific as well. Special shout out to the kid who played Dodger. And the best of all was the person who played Fagin. He had the right amount of campiness, humor and danger. It was particularly funny when he broke the 4th wall with the audience. an overall A+ in my book.

Excellent performance of OliverI really enjoyed today’s performance of Oliver! in London. It was excellent – the music, lighting, and overall production were fantastic, and the actors all gave very strong performances. I especially loved Fagin, Nancy, and the Artful Dodger, though the entire cast was very good. I was slightly confused by the change in the sequence of events compared to the original, but overall it worked quite well. There were a few moments that felt a bit cheeky, with some unnecessary sexy content, particularly involving Mr Blundell and the “Scream” song, which I didn’t feel added much to the show. That said, it was still a really enjoyable performance. The energy, talent, and atmosphere were great, and I would happily go and see it again. A very entertaining and well-performed production we also couldn’t see all of the performance when they were on the platform or coming down the steps or ladders due to the way we were seated and nobody said anything about restricted for you. I’ll definitely get a ticket on the next floor next time.

I was at the first row of stalls, center It was great, specially to appreciate thé talent and involvment of every performers and specially th orchestra conductor and Simon Lifkin. But no one told me, when I booked these seat that I would be, several times, blinded by the top white lights from the cieling of stage. That was, at certain moment, painfull and unbearable. It was wonderful - great performances, atmosphere, music. I like the traditional decor and feel. maybe the entrance and stairs (we were in the grand circle) seemed a bit shabby but the overall experience was magical. Fagin in particular. (The show was Oliver). Great costumes and set and acoustics.
