Oliver! in London

Starring:

Simon Lipkin

Living theatre legend Cameron Mackintosh takes to the driving seat for the latest version of the all-time classic Oliver! Now the latest adaptation of the story adored by millions is on the way to the West End once again following a summer season at the Chichester Festival Theatre. The musical has been totally reconceived with the help of director and choreographer Matthew Bourne.

Why you should book Oliver! tickets

  • The musical inspired a 1968 film of the same name. The film itself won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture
  • Oliver! heads back to London 15 years after its last revival at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2009

A delightful musical that thrills theatreland every time

Oliver! is based on the 1838 novel by Charles Dickens. The stage musical book, music and lyrics are by Lionel Bart, whose reimagining of the novel premiered at the Wimbledon Theatre in 1960. Audiences went wild and the show hit theatreland with a bang, enjoying a record-breaker of a run. 1963 saw Lionel Bart win the Tony Award for Best Original Score for his work. The show wowed Broadway then took off on a string of major London revivals: 1977 to ‘80, ‘94 to ‘98, 2008 to ‘11 plus a two year UK tour in 2011.

Whether you’ve seen the musical or movie before or not, you’ll recognise the songs. Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself and I'd Do Anything are classics, and they’re just the tip of the iceberg in an unforgettable score.

What is Oliver! about?

You’ll meet the orphaned Oliver Twist, who escapes the cruel Victorian workhouse he’s been sent to, hiding in London's underworld with Fagan the dodgy leader and his gang of young pickpockets. Will he ever find happiness? The Artful Dodger, Nancy, and the boy’s unexpected saviour weave an exciting story that never goes out of date.

The cast and creative team of Oliver!

The cast includes Simon Lipkin (Guys and Dolls, Avenue Q) as Fagin, Shanay Holmes (Miss Saigon, The Bodyguard) as Nancy, Aaron Sidwell (Henry VI, Wicked) as Bill Sikes, Billy Jenkins (Les Misérables, BBC's Dodger) as the Artful Dodger and Philip Franks (The Rocky Horror Show, Witness for the Prosecution) as Mr Brownlow.

With a sensational score in store and Matthew Bourne’s fresh choreography to look forward to, it’s tipped to be another West End smash. Bourne, Mackintosh and Sam Mendes (who also reimagined Swan Lake, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and Edward Scissorhands) originally reinvented Lionel Bart's classic in 1994 at the London Palladium, and again in 2009 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, upping the ante every time. This time around you can expect an intimate feel to the staging which has been ‘thrillingly designed’ by Lez Brotherston (Fiddler on the Roof, Me and My Girl, Flowers for Mrs Harris).

Oliver! is co-directed by Jean-Pierre Van Der Spuy with lighting design by Paule Constable and Ben Jacobs. The sound design is by Adam Fisher, video design by George Reeve, and the original orchestrations by William David Brohn are adapted by Stephen Metcalfe. The music supervision comes from Graham Hurman.

Prepare to experience one of the greatest musicals of all time as Oliver! makes a return to the West End, packed with a compelling narrative, iconic songs, and lively choreography.

The creators (director, choreographer, actors) try too hard to make this "interesting", as if they don't trust the material. Fagin seems to think this is stand-up comedy, and Matthew Bourne (as usual) ignores the context, showcasing the dances rather than letting them serve the story. While diverting, especially with the great material, this is not a serious production. That said, the audience seemed to enjoy it, so maybe it's just me. The set and lighting were terrific, as was the orchestra. Still, I wouldn't recommend this "Oliver!" to first-timers.

Oliver-Better than Ever Before

In 1968, Oliver burst on the screen and launched countless songs which are now a part of our collective musical fabric. This production brings glory to the score with incredible dancing, strong voices and great acting. We saw the show today with Fagin’s u’study and honestly, he should be awarded an Olivier, a Tony and any other award he wants! What a production! Better than Broadway and as American’s we’re thrilled to say: Brava, well done!

An oldie brought back to life

The original movie from decades ago was very good. I didn’t realize just how good a stage production could be! The theatre set design was awesome, and I liked how it moved to show distance in the play, the set so well designed that many people easily moved around. The stage scene set was fabulous. The story line was great and it evoked emotions for me. The acting was superb…the person who played the lead woman, Nancy, really had a wonderful set of vocal cords. Just wonderful! The person who played Fagan did an outstanding job with great comic timing. The kids were great in their singing and dancing…really nice to see them do their parts very well. The entire cast really, were so good! Really good! And the orchestra was fabulous!! I give this production 5 stars and it ranks up there with the classics (old and new) like Les Miz, Hamilton, Phantom of the Opera. This was a REALLY GREAT show!! I am SO glad I went!

Oliver reimagined

I saw the original London production about 50 years ago and feel that this was better. In the meantime I have been a theatre house stage manager in the provinces and I am well aware of the technical advances that enable these improvements. In my time I have seen many productions of the show, school, youth theatre, professional and not. In my humble opinion this was the best Fagin I have ever seen. His rapport with his gang was the best.

Good, safe performance, NOT 5 star.

The theatre itself was probably one of the smallest I have been in. I thought the show started slowly but grew into it after the interval as the classic songs (very well performed) gripped the audience more. During earlier parts I felt some low level sexual inuendo was not relevant and certainly not in keeping with the original story. In short a good, safe overall performance but nothing special.

The dancing was superlative -- so all of the kids in the cast were terrific as well. Special shout out to the kid who played Dodger. And the best of all was the person who played Fagin. He had the right amount of campiness, humor and danger. It was particularly funny when he broke the 4th wall with the audience. an overall A+ in my book.
