Written by Kate Trefry and directed by Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin, the play is a prequel to the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, whose fifth and final season aired last year. Set in Hawkins, Indiana in 1959, it follows Henry Creel, a new student at Hawkins High School with a dark secret - and who will one day become the terrifying villain, Vecna. Featuring the teenage versions of familiar characters from the show like Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper, this is a based on an original story by Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, that lays the foundations for the events that will change the town of Hawkins forever.
The play opened at the Phoenix Theatre on 14 December 2023, while the Broadway production began previews at the Marquis Theatre on 28 March 2025 and opened officially on 22 April 2025. The West End production received the WhatsOnStage Award for Best New
Play, as well as two Olivier Awards, for Best Entertainment and Best Set
Design, plus the Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Set Design and Most
Promising Newcomer. The Broadway production received three Tony Awards. The Broadway production was filmed in February 2026 for a forthcoming release on Netflix.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow will have its final performance on 27 December 2026 in the West End and 3 January 2027 on Broadway.
