Sinatra in London
Sinatra – A remarkable multi-media spectacular
Frank Sinatra won 11 Grammy Awards and sold 150 million records. His first UK show was held at the Palladium in 1950. He returned to the venue in 1975 to give 10 concerts, supported by the jazz legends Sarah Vaughan and Count Basie.
The iconic music of Old Blue Eyes is set to fill the capital's iconic Palladium Theatre to the rooftops with the word première of Sinatra. It's a long awaited tribute to one of the greatest singers of all time, a man whose deep velvet voice and brilliant sense of musical timing made him a legend many times over.
But this is much more than just another tribute show. It's a feast of contemporary multi-media creativity. It has the keen support and endorsement of the Sinatra family and it's seriously poignant since the singer had his London debut at the Palladium, on the self-same stage.
The production features all the great man's best-loved hits including the classics Come Fly With Me, Fly Me To The Moon, New York, New York and the legendary My Way, which inspired several generations including the members of Britain's colourful 1970s punk movement.
Rare and original master recordings combine with the very latest multi-media technology to celebrate Sinatra's massively successful career. Frank's life and times are brought to vibrant life by a 24 piece orchestra, a company of 20 dancers and singers, intimate family photos, loads of old film clips of performances and several very rare interviews. Much of the material is unique, never before seen in public.
The plot covers the singer's formative years, early life and much of his glittering career. If you've always loved his music and believe, like millions of others, that he was one of the greatest entertainers the world has ever seen, you'll adore it.
What does the Sinatra family say? According to Frank's son, Frank Sinatra Junior, “2015 is the year of my father’s centennial. One of the most exciting events we have planned is this London show. My father first played the Palladium in July 1950, so it is fitting that the show will debut in the historic venue, as London was one of his favourite cities in the entire world. We hope his many British fans will come and celebrate with us as the magic Ol’ Blue Eyes will soon be back in town.”
Is it the same as the previously-announced musical tribute called Sinatra 100? No. Sinatra 100 was due to play at the Palladium from 2th March 2014, but has since been cancelled. This is the one, only and finest official Sinatra tribute show in town!
Sinatra - The story
What's the show about? It's full-on, 100% Sinatra, The Man and the Music, and it's running at the Palladium theatre for a strictly limited season, 17th July to 10th October 2015.

The music was beautiful, the Jazz band fantastic. The assemble of young dancers were exceptional. We couldn't fault the show at all. When it ended we just wanted to stay and watch it all over again. I grew up with my parents playing Frank Sinatra music which I just tolerated. Only in my adult years have I appreciated what a wonderful entertainer he was with such a distinctive voice. Thank you for putting on the show. Loved it.

As a long standing Sinatra fan, its truly a shame that i was never able to see Frank while he was here, nevertheless, seeing Sinatra: the man and his music was an awe inspiring show, i felt like he was there thanks to modern day remastering, and the use of microfilm projection was quite marvelous. I really hope this show eventually becomes a permanent fixture in the west end scene

The show was awful. We made a mistake thinking Frank Junior was on. We might as well have bought a video instead of paying a lot of money to see a screen. The dancers were ok but the choreography was appaling.

Being great Sinatra fans we enjoyed his story and of course the singing. We thought the dancers were very good, energetic, and enhanced the show. While the band was excellent the sound could be toned down as it sometimes overshadowed Sinatra's voice Over all it lived up to our expectations of an enjoyable show, and we would recommend it to others..

Generally enjoyable-- although I felt the music and Sinatra's singing was too loudly delivered one or two notches down would have been better. Dancers didn't seem to have a full troop to cover the stage (14) although their energy and effort should be rewarded. Staff in the theatre helpful and pleasant when dealing with the public.

The video footage of Frank was as expected. His storytelling of parts of his life were okay - i am sure there is better stuff out there. The songs he sang were okay but too dismal to lift the audience. Come fly with me, New York, New York and The Lady is a tramp were superb and only the most upbeat songs he sang. Sadly everything else was dull, and disappointing.

Love Sinatra, press reviews stated frank's son singing, not the case for our night. It was basically film clips of Sinatra with his voice from interviews. So for 2 hours it was dancers and an orcastra so felt a little let down considering the price paid. Very clever how it was put together with live music and videos of Frank. We love the music so still enjoyed ourselves.

Although the orquestra plays very well and the tecnology allows us to be close to Frank, we really expected someone singing, in person. Besides, some transitions between the scenes seemed confusing and out of place, as well as mixing images from young and old Sinatra. We were expecting much more. Remarks: perfect harmony between Frank's voice and orquestra.

This is a great show, with a superb 20+ piece live band and some wonderful archive video of Sinatra with many of his best songs. So why was the first half hour 'flat', with a cold atmosphere and quite a few empty seats? Surprising for a Friday night. Maybe this show is just too expensive, so why no discounting of tickets? We were led to believe in the pre-publicity that Sinatra would be projected as a hologram, as if in 3D! The reality is a 2D portrait video screen, with archive footage often in mono, and some jazzy background graphics to add colour and movement. It almost works, with one advantage being that Sinatra can be projected much larger in close up than he would appear 'on the stage, in person'. The downside is that the orchestra is amplified too much, and especially the bass drum over amplified, which was very noticeable through the opening overture. The band had a 'woolly' sound, as if it was 'dampened', and this contrasted with what we are used to with Sinatra's remastered hi-fidelity recordings. So we need more treble, less bass drum, and a better overall balance. In fact 'hi-fi'. On the plus side, the ensemble work was brilliant, and hard to believe that this was not the Nelson Riddle studio orchestra, even if there were less players than he uses! But why no guitar (could not see him), yet TWO pianists/keyboards? Bass, drums and piano were superb, as were all of the soloists, so full marks to all the players - I think the main fault lies with the sound desk! The dancers were a delightful surprise, and added greatly to the atmosphere and context of the times portrayed in the story. Sinatra's life story is an interesting historical reference for teenagers, and the older generation grew up with the swing and big band era, so yes, the show can appeal to all ages. It just needs some subtle adjustments and some promotional work to ensure a full house at every show for the rest of the run. The band and cast deserve this!

you should not have sold tickets of the front rows of the stalls as it was very efeaning just after 15 mns. and if you do they should come with a health warning. i treated my dad who is die-hard fan of frank sinatra music and this the comments he sent me after leaving the show only after 20 mns. There was a nice young couple beside me on the front row and when I got up they looked and I said 'It's too loud I'm moving back!'. And they moved back to the middle with me. Then I moved to the very back row. About a quarter of the seats were empty. Those theatre people are going to tell me that the sound is got to be that loud to reach the back of the upper circle. That would be bull-shit for when I was at the ROH with Flossie (which is a huge place) we were at the front near the orchestra and the sound level was perfect. That guy who was working the sound from the back of the stalls should be sacked. I've heard sound at pop concerts and at Notting Hill carnival but not as loud and distorted as that was. Tell them it was painfully loud and distorted and tell them I'm a West-End cinema projectionist and know about sound. They will probably tell you to inform the theatre manager though. There was a 30 piece orchestra in the show. Then Sinatra's voice and some film then chorus girls. There was a guy at the back with a sound console supposed to be controlling and mixing the sound mikes. I should have spoken to him before leaving. However I don't think a 30 piece orchestra should need mikes. This was the letter I sent to the manager and the director of the show. Just to let you know that I left your theatre tonight Thursday 20mins after the start of the show as the sound was painfully loud and distorted, I was chief projectionist at a west-end cinema and know a bit about sound. Quality yours truly.

The show pivots around love footage of Sinatra so it feels like you have stepped back in time and have the opportunity to see and here him sing. The backing music is provided by the live orchestra who truly are amazing musicians. There is a group of dancers and personally I didn't think they were that good or indeed added anything to the show. However I guess without some live intervention it would have been a case of watching some film footage enhanced by live music. Whilst I enjoyed the show its not the best West End show I've seen but I am glad I experienced it .

Unless you are a frank Sinatra tragic the problem( it is the main problem but a big one) is that the main actor who dominates the show is a video. Contrast that with the Carol King musical which really works. The other problem is that because it is just video and I suspect it is heavily based on family contribution it gives no real insight into his life or the type of person he was. There are some details but very benign. I'm not suggesting I was misled but I would not recommend it

As if the West End weren’t starry enough there’s a current crop of shows starring dead performers. Or rather representations of them. At The Garrick Theatre there’s the surprisingly engaging LET IT BE in which a Beatles tribute band of look-a-likes perform the hits in chronological order juxtaposed with projected images and news bulletins from the time.
