Jesus Christ Superstar chronicles the last week of Jesus's life up until his crucifixion, tackling his relationships with Judas and Mary Magdalene, and exploring the complicated politics and emotional dynamics of the time. The current revival is directed by Tim Sheader with choreography by Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie and design by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Tom Scutt.
Alongside Sam Ryder as Jesus, Tyrone Huntley as Judas Iscariot, Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene, and David Thaxton as Pontius Pilate, the role of King Herod is shared between six performers, with Jesse Tyler Ferguson having completed his run earlier this month and Richard Armitage stepping into the role. Boy George was due to take over from Armitage from 3 to 15 August, followed by Layton Williams and Julian Clary.
However, Boy George has now withdrawn from the production, as per an announcement made by his manager, Paul Kemsley, via social media. Although no reason was given, Kemsley thanked the producers for their professionalism and apologised to fans who had purchased tickets in order to see George perform. He stated “George has never been afraid to stand by his personal convictions" and that the decision had been made in the best interests of the singer, as well as to allow the production to remain the focus. George recently released a controversial single, 'We Will Dance Again', in support of Israel's military action in Palestine, which caused widespread criticism across social media, including calls to protest outside the Palladium.
Current Herod Richard Armitage will cover Boy George's performance dates. Jesus Christ Superstar is currently playing at the London Palladium until 5 September 2026, and will transfer to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 16 October 2026 until 9 January 2027.
