GAME OF THRONES: THE MAD KING to transfer to London in 2027

Last week we speculated whether Game of Thrones: The Mad King could see a London transfer. Today, it's been confirmed that the critically acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company production will transfer to London in 2027.

Game of Thrones: The Mad King had its world premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday 8 August and will have its final performance tomorrow, Saturday 5 September, following a completely sold-out season. Opening to wide-spread critical acclaim, with The Telegraph calling it "a spellbinding spectacle that serves GOT newbies and devotees", the news of a London transfer comes as no surprise.

Creator and executive producer George R R Martin praised the RSC production and expressed his excitement about the opportunity to share the play with a wider audience in London, saying, "It promises to be an exhilarating journey."

The play is a prequel to George R R Martin's best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire books, an epic fantasy series set in the seven kingdoms of Westeros, where the ruling houses scheme and engage in political games to win control of the coveted Iron Throne, while deadly supernatural forces stir in the north of the continent. The books inspired a smash-hit HBO television series, Game of Thrones, which ran for eight seasons and became a cultural phenomenon before airing its series finale in 2019.

Written by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke, The Mad King takes place over a decade before the events of Game of Thrones, and tells the story of the fateful string of events that would trigger Robert Baratheon's rebellion and the fall of the Targaryen dynasty. The great houses of Westeros gather at a grand tournament in Harrenhal, where celebration turns to suspicion and whispers of treason begin to fly around King Aerys's inner circle.

The creative team includes Puppetry and Movement Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell (Lume); Set Designer Chloe Lamford; Costume Designer Georgia McGuinness; Lighting Designer Jon Clark; Composer Will Stuart; Sound Designer Tom Gibbons; Casting Director Amy Ball CDG; Fight Director Bethan Clark; and Intimacy Director Ingrid Mackinnon.
