Following on from their recent collaboration on the smash-hit movie adaptations of Wicked, Jonathan Bailey (Richard II, Bridge Theatre) and Ariana Grande will star in the production staged at the Barbican Centre.
Directed by Marianne Elliot and with design by Tom Scutt (Into the Woods, Bridge Theatre), it will be the first time the production by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine has played since its last revival at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2005. Making its debut on Broadway in 1984, Sunday in the Park with George is a musical about artist George, a fictionalised version of Seurat, who struggles to balance artistic creation with personal relationships while painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
The production has won numerous awards, including two Tony Awards and Best Musical at the 1991 Olivier Awards. It is known for having a gorgeous score, with numbers like "We Do Not Belong Together", "Finishing the Hat", and the unifying finale number "Sunday" being very recognisable in this show.
Sunday in the Park with George is produced by Empire Street Productions and presented in association with the Barbican.
All further information about the production will be announced at a later date.
