Marylebone Theatre, Patrick Myles and David Luff in partnership with Intermission Ensemble have developed a new production of Moliere's classic comedy, written and directed by Darren Raymond, recipient of Shakespeare’s Globe’s prestigious Sam Wanamaker Award 2025, playwright and Artistic Director of award-winning drama charity Intermission Youth and its graduate arm Intermission Ensemble.
Tartuffe, or The Imposter, or The Hypocrite, first performed in 1664, is the story of Orgon, a wealthy man infatuated with a fraudulent holy man Tartuffe, who poses as pious while exploiting Orgon, attempting to take his property, marry his daughter, and seduce his wife. This production will put a modern spin on this deliciously biting comedy, relocating it to an African-Caribbean household and bringing new humour and modern pathos to the original text.
Mark Rylance stars in the titular role, returning to the Marylebone Theatre following his his 2024 sell-out performance of Venus and Adonis. The production also reunites Rylance and ULTZ, the Olivier Award-winning and Tony-nominated set and costume designer, who have worked on multiple productions together including Jerusalem and Much Ado About Nothing.
In a unique creative union, Rylance will share the stage with Intermission Ensemble, the graduates of Intermission Youth, the award-winning drama charity for which Rylance has long served as a trustee and advocate, allowing the award-winning actor to perform alongside the rising talent nurtured and celebrated by this charity. Paapa Essiedu notably gave a shout out to the organisation during his acceptance speech at the Olivier Awards earlier this month.
Tartuffe (Remixed) will have its world premiere at Marylebone Theatre this autumn for a strictly limited run. More details to be revealed soon.
