From Olivier and Tony Award-Winning playwright Richard Nelson (Farewell to the Theatre, Goodnight Children Everywhere) comes a witty reimagining of a pivotal historical moment. It's 1939, the world is on the precipice of World War II, and King George VI and his wife are visiting President Roosevelt and the First Lady in their country home, the first ever visit of a British monarch to the United States. Over hot dogs and beers , King George must attempt to convince Roosevelt to support his country in the impending war. But as cultures clash and the secrets, self-doubts, fears, and indiscretions of both married couples spill out in a house with very thin walls, will the special relationship between the White House and the Crown survive the weekend?
Robert Lindsay will play President Roosevelt, with Jemma Redgrave as Eleanor Roosevelt. They are joined by Andrew Havill as King George VI and Rebecca Night as Queen Elizabeth. The wider cast includes Harry Anton, Teresa Banham, Oliver Cotton, Bryony Miller, Rachel Pickup and Eileen Nicholas.
The production is directed by Richard Nelson, with design by Tom Piper, lighting design by James F Ingalis and sound design by John Leonard.
Springwood will play at Hampstead Theatre from 19 June to 25 July 2026
