A stirring, powerful exploration of identity, belonging, and storytelling that spans three unforgettable women across three different time periods and places, connected by blood, song, and struggle: Cait, a repressed minister's wife in 17th century Scotland; Jean, a spirited teenager in 18th century Ireland; and Sarah, a queer woman in present day America, drawn by the pull of her ancestors' voices.

Formerly titled A Mother's Song, Ballad Lines was first commissioned in 2014 and is the creation of award-winning Scottish singer-songwriter Finn Anderson (Islander, Streets) and award-winning director Tania Azevedo (& Juliet, But I'm a Cheerleader). It combines original new songs with centuries-old traditional Scottish, Irish, and Appalachian ballads performed by an all-female band, blending the timeless beauty of folk music with the relatable emotional drama of a musical. Azevedo described it as “an epic story of beauty, and transatlantic drama, one that asks how we honour those who came before us while carving out the lives we choose today” and Anderson added, “we hope this show helps reclaim folk music as a space for diverse, intersectional storytelling.”
