What happens when everything goes wrong?

Not so long ago Brooke had everything: the job, the flat, the girlfriend. But it all goes wrong just before her 30th birthday, leaving her single. Luckily, as the writer of algorithms for a dating app, she’s the perfect person to figure out the science behind love. Can she code for attraction?

When Brooke decides to give online dating a chance, a beautiful tragic-comic story unfolds. She soon discovers the limitations of algorithms and the many challenges behind dating in the digital age, and realises it’s actually really hard to find the perfect partner.

A bisexual Bridget Jones for the internet generation

Billed as a bisexual Bridget Jones for the online generation, this one-woman show and its hapless heroine are perfect for those of us who’ve had the feeling we’re not enough, but at the same time too much. As it turns out, aiming for perfection can seriously damage your self-worth.

The show is written and performed by Sadie Clark, the TV Foundation’s Netflix Stage to Screen New Voice Award winner. She describes herself as a queer, bisexual, neurodivergent actor, writer and improviser. She has performed at Soho Theatre, Pleasance Courtyard, Omnibus Theatre, The Nottingham Playhouse and the Mercury Theatre.

Algorithms is her debut play. It sold out at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019, named a best of the festival pick in The Guardian before transferring to Soho Theatre for two separate sold-out runs. In 2021 it was adapted into a six-part original audio series for Audible, released in 2022 and shortlisted for the BBC Audio Drama Awards. It ultimately won a Silver ARIAS for ‘Best Drama’ in 2023.

Full of brilliant observations

The show is packed with insightful observations about love, sex and relationships, highlighting the ways the internet changes how we see ourselves. It focuses on the danger of comparing our real-life selves to the perfect lives we’re fed on social media and see in rom-com movies, and it’s heartbreaking at times despite being full of warmth and humour.

The fun is directed by Madelaine Moore in association with the producer Wildpark Entertainment and the production has been described as an impressive debut, entertaining and inspiring. It was awarded four stars at the Edinburgh Fringe.
