Into The Woods in London
They're dark and scary. So why would you venture Into The Woods? To sell your cow, lift the spell that's been put on you, visit your mum or see the king? Maybe the woods are where you'll find yourself. Stephen Sondheim's dazzling musical enjoys a major new revival at the Bridge Theatre for the first time since 2016.
About Into The Woods
Four classic Brothers Grimm fairytales have been cleverly combined to create a tale about a baker, his wife and their quest to reverse the curse a wicked witch put on them, leaving them childless.
Together the baker and his wife plus the witch, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Rapunzel take us on a journey way beyond happy-ever-after to discover the things that really matter. A fantastic score and memorable storytelling mix with humour, a warm heart and scary twists to create an unmissable theatrical treat that is as enchanting as it is impossible to predict, where fairytales collide in unexpected ways.
This is Stephen Sondheim and James Lapines' second collaboration, following on from 1984's Sunday in the Park with George and written in 1986. It debuted in San Diego during 1986 and premiered on Broadway the following year, winning three Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical.
Since then it has been staged many times including a 1988 US tour, a 1990 West End production and a ten year anniversary concert in 1997. In 2002 it enjoyed a Broadway revival and 2010 saw it on stage at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, later transferring to a Shakespeare in the Park production in New York City. A Disney movie in 2014, which was nominated for several awards, was followed by a 2022 Broadway revival.
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Book by James Lapine, Directed by Jordan Fein (Fiddler on the Roof, Regent’s Park), designed by Tony Award-winner Tom Scutt (Cabaret, West End and Broadway).
With a combination of Sondheim's stunning score and a darkly humourous yet heartfelt narrative, Bridge Theatre's revival of Into the Woods is a must in your theatre calendar for 2026!

The show is a typical late- period Sondheim musical. High concept idea, wonderful lyrics, plenty of wit and jokes but few good songs. The production is terrific, brilliant lighting, sound and staging, great performances all round..

such a great show for people of all agesI saw the original production of into the woods in 1988 with bernadette peters - at the time I was 19 and my head was full of dreams. Now, at 56 years old, I have faced loss and the challenges that come after "happily ever after." As such, the second act of this show resonated with me so deeply - this production was glorious - I really loved it.

Near the end some of the lighting on stage was direct into audience which was slightly distracting & maybe an issue with those with epilepsy. Although good view I ended up with crook in neck due to the seating height ( not able to have feet on ground) Brilliant performances despite understudies

Superb production and performanceThis fabulous cast combined with the music of Sondheim would have made a great evening out, but combined with the superb lighting, sound, musicianship and the stunning set - it was a masterpiece and the best musical I have seen in a long time. Thank you.

Traditional producion proving the show works to this day in origianl format.Brilliantly executed production with perfect fit performances, Sondheim fans will be delighted and people new to the show will be enchanted. The show garnered more laughs than I have experienced in the 10 or so previous productions of ITW that I have been lucky enough to see. The design quality for the woods was undoubtedly the best I have seen.
