Allegra in London
Starring:
Maureen Lipman
This play tells the story of the titular Allegra, a woman so full of joy that she can't stop herself from bursting into song: at home, in the streets, even in shops and restaurants. Sometimes the music is in her head, but sometimes it results in a loud and disruptive performance that causes chaos in the village where she lives. Allegra's brother, Ronen, and her carer, Anna, struggle to control Allegra's eccentricities and keep her out of trouble with the police. But is it possible without destroying the great happiness that fills her heart?
Written by two-time Olivier Award nominated playwright Peter Quilter and directed and choreographed by three-time Olivier Award winner Stephen Mear, Allegra is a heartwarming comedy with specular song and dance sequences as well as an emotional examination of how a mind might disappear. It has been praised as "truly memorable" (Backstage) and "a supremely gorgeous show of joy and hope and a lot of heart in these dark times” (Gaydio Radio). Dame Maureen Lipman plays Allegra, returning to the West End following her acclaimed performance in Rose in 2023. The production reunites her with Stephen Mear 28 years after they first worked together on the National Theatre's acclaimed production of Oklahoma!. She is joined in the cast by John Middleton (Emmerdale), Elizabeth Bower (Trollied) and Bailey Patrick (London Kills).
Don't miss this joyful, hopeful story with an emotional core that will leave you in tears.

Funny and colourful musical.Great acting and singing, very colourful and, though with a tinge of real life challenge, performed in a balanced humourous manner. Loved the show and the actors notably Maureen Lipman's energy and joy in performing.

Total delightFabulous current storyline and so well acted. Timing brilliant and Maureen’s ability in particular to add exaggerated but totally believable mix of fun, pathos and irony to the role, as well as her athletic ability at 80 is a delight on its own. Ably supported by a brilliant cast the play was absolutely brilliant. Thank you. Maureen you put Hull well on the map (from a fellow Hullite)

Cheesy, predictable, pantoI felt I was in a parallel universe. People around me laughed hysterically at very lame jokes. Several people left at the interval. Second half was a bit better. I went with high hopes, but left feeling a bit deflated. Clearly, some of the audience loved it, but not me.

Maureen is marvellous as AllegraThe story was poignant, funny, sad but true of how we view people on the fringe of sanity. But it's a feel good story and one that the audience is encouraged to engage with. I loved it and came out smiling.
