Transferring from the Chichester Festival Theatre, the stage adaptation of Atonement is coming to London. Stretching from the 1930s through the Second World War to present day, this heartbreaking story of passion and loss is narrated by Briony Tallis, who as a girl witnesses her elder sister Cecilia having an affair with Robbie, their housekeeper's son. Driven by childish jealousy and naivety, she makes a thoughtless accusation that will fatally alter Cecilia and Robbie's lives, driving the star-crossed lovers apart, and leaving a grief-stricken Briony to spend the rest of her life trying to atone.

Ian McEwan's dazzling novel, Atonement, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and voted by Time Magazine and the Guardian as one of the 100 greatest novels of the past century. It was adapted into a 2007 film directed by Joe Wright and starring Keira Knightley and Saorise Ronan as Cecilia and Briony. This passionate story of war, love, and jealousy was adapted for the stage by Christopher Hampton, whose many plays and adaptations also include The Philanthropist and Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and directed by Adam Penford (Punch, The Sound of Music).
