Cinderella (La Cenerentola) in London

Cinderella, beleaguered and oppressed by her cruel family, dreams of escaping to a better life. When she meets the charming Prince Don Ramiro at a ball, an otherworldly team of magical helpers intervenes to help the two lovebirds find their happily ever after. Cinderella (La Cenerentola) (‘Cinderella, Goodness Triumphant’) is a 19th century opera by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini that reimagines and plays with the familiar elements of the story of Cinderella.

Now it comes to life again at the London Coliseum in a sparkling new revival directed by International Opera Award-nominated director Julia Burbach and conducted by Yi-Chen Lin and starring mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny and tenor Aaron Godfrey-Mayes, both making their English National Opera debuts in the starring roles. Set in contemporary London, this poignant, funny, and dreamy reimagining is filled with beloved characters and joyful, ethereal music that will transport you into another world.

The Balleg that was an Opera

I wanted to take my daughter to the ballet, so I was very disappointed that the show was an opera! It was an expensive mistake!

Charming!

Very clever staging and wonderful performances from the stage to the orchestra. I’m sometimes wary of English translations of Italian classic opera, but this production brought the spirit of Rossini’s piece to life. The humor was clever without going too much into camp or cheap laughs. The only weird moment was a subtitle after the opera encouraging people to film the curtain call with their cell phones, which have no place at any time in a theater.

Felt Like An Amateur Production on a Big Budget

Plot was hard to follow (turned out the mother was a ghost - which explained why she didn't say anything). Lots of running around the stage. Very chaotic production.

Review: CINDERELLA (LA CENRENTOLA) at London Coliseum

On a modern split level set by Herbert Murauer, the cast of ENO’s latest iteration of Rossini’s LA CENERENTOLA (CINDERELLA) are swept along by an assured orchestra under the command of Yi-Chen Lin who despite her youth, conducts with exactitude and distinction.
