Nigeria, 2014: during the height of a violent military insurgency, teenage girls Tisana, Haleema, and Ruha are best friends doing their best to live a normal life, spending their days obsessing over celebrities, sex positions, and dodging carbs. But that all changes when they're kidnapped by the extremist group Boko Haram and their future becomes terrifyingly uncertain. Hanging on a knife's edge, the girls must rely on each other to survive, but fear and religious differences begin straining their friendship and their hope for escape.

Ewa Dina (The Welsh Dragon), winner of the 2026 JMK Award, makes her Young Vic debut directing Theresa Ikoko's (Rocks) award-winning play Girls. Iko, who won the 2015 Alfred Fagon Award, 2016's George Devine Award, and was a finalist for the Verity Bargate Award, paints a poignant, devastating picture of the 2014 military insurrection when hundreds of girls were kidnapped from their homes. This powerful play based on horrifying true events explores friendship, survival, and the impossible choices we're faced with in the context of a harrowing period in Nigerian history.
