Holy Fool in London

Holy Fool tells the story of Soviet-era Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the greatest musical figures of the 20th century. At the height of Stalin's regime, Shostakovich walks a perilous tightrope. Under the constant threat of torture and death, he must appease a brutal despot – while quietly resisting him. Faking compliance, he resists Stalin in his own way by composing code embedded into his music, which conceals as much as it reveals.

Holy Fool is a tense, darkly witty exploration of the absurdity of tyranny, the bravery of resistance and the triumph of the human spirit. Written by Rosalind Adler and Lea Sellers, and directed by Kate Fahy, this thrilling drama offers a searing look into the life of one of Russia's greatest composers and investigates what it means to be an artist under a totalitarian regime. Step into a dark period in Russian history and be transported by the incredible score and thrilling storytelling of this unflinching play.

Don't miss this powerful story about resisting oppression through the power of music.

Innovative and topical!

The show was very thought provoking, dealing with the practicalities of daily life for the talented composer Shostakovich and his wife, under the brutal Stalin regime. It showed how repression and censorship impacted the composer and raised questions about 'who does art belong to?'. Despite his obvious talent, Shostakovich was also portrayed as a weak and self-obsessed man, whilst his academic physicist wife shone through as the linchpin of the family. A remarkable story brought to life with dry humour and impressive acting, which is also very topical within the current context of modern day Russia and its repressive regime.

Masterful, Memorable, and Moving

Great story bright to life by four terrific actors and wonderful decisions by the director. The best of six was lays we saw during our week in London. Bravo!
