Escape to the countryside with Fredrick Ashton’s whimsical, wondrous ballet about the capricious Lise, the only daughter of Widow Simone, who owns a prosperous farm. Lise loves the young farmer Colas, but her ambitious mother plans to marry her off to Alain, the son of a wealthy proprietor. The rebellious, wilful Lise is determined to thwart her mother’s plans and marry for love rather than money, but mother and daughter are equally stubborn, and hilarity inevitably ensues.
Full of humour, heart, and choreographic innovation, La Fille Mal Gardee, inspired by Jean Dauberval’s French ballet, won hearts when it first premiered in the 1960s with its affectionate, nostalgic, and humorous portrayal of pastoral life.
