Macbeth in London
It’s the Scottish Play! Macbeth, Shakespeare's extraordinary psychological drama, has been spooking audiences since 1606. The brilliant David Tennant and Cush Jumbo are back in their landmark roles, set to wow us all over again with this critically acclaimed production. The Bard would be thrilled.
Expect unsettling intimacy and savage action, all unfolding at high speed in a powerful tale of love, murder and renewal directed by Max Webster. The production heads to the Harold Pinter Theatre following on from its sold out run at the Donmar Warehouse.
The plot: death, death and more death!
The Scottish general Macbeth is told by three witches that he’ll become Scotland’s king. His wife convinces him to kill the current king, which he does, and Macbeth takes the throne. Paranoia drives him into a killing spree, then civil war overthrows him and yet more death ensues. Absolutely splendid drama from end to end, no wonder it’s as popular as ever.
High tech sound design
At the heart of the experience is cutting edge sound design and live Celtic folk music. The result is uniquely immersive. You can even hear the actors’ thoughts. No wonder this unforgettable staging transfers to the West End after its sold-out run at the Donmar Warehouse. This is what we call class.
Prepare for remarkable audio. The production uses something called binaural stereo to create a compelling 3D soundscape, which enhances the plot and the action so it feels even more real. You can’t watch it without the special headphones provided, they’re critical to your enjoyment and understanding.
Every seat and wheelchair space has its own wired on-ear headphones that weigh next to nothing, comfortable thanks to foam ear-pads. The volume is set by the sound engineer so it’s perfect, and can’t damage your hearing. Everything’s kept spotless.
The cast and creative of Macbeth
David Tenant‘s West End credits include Good, The Muppets Take The O2, Much Ado About Nothing and Don Huan in Soho. Cush Jumbo appeared in Brixton Stories at the Lyric Theatre, Liquid Gold at the Almeida and Love's Labour's Lost at the Globe to name just three. They’re both multi-award-winning actors on screen and stage.
The rest of the cast comprises Moyo Akandé, Annie Grace, Brian James O’Sullivan, Casper Knopf, Cal MacAninch, Kathleen MacInnes, Alasdair Macrae, Rona Morison, Noof Ousellam, Raffi Phillips, Jatinder Singh Randhawa, Ros Watt, and Benny Young.
Director Max Webster is joined by Designer Rosanna Vize, Lighting Designer Bruno Poet, Sound Designer Gareth Fry, Movement Director Shelley Maxwell, Composer and Musical Director Alasdair Macrae, Fight Directors: Rachel Bown-Williams and Ruth Cooper-Brown of Rc-Annie Ltd, and Casting Director Anna Cooper CDG.
This production has to be heard to be believed, Macbeth will astound audiences with its gripping tale of ambition, power, and the destructive consequences of unchecked ambition.
