About Hay Fever
Written in 1924 and premiering in the West End in 1925, Noel Coward's classic comedy follows an eccentric couple, retired actress Judith and novelist David Bliss, and their grown children Simon and Sorel, living in an English country house. When each family member invites an unexpected guest to their home for the weekend, their self-centred and outlandish behaviour drives their guests into confusion and inevitably leads to chaos and hilarity.
This revival will be directed by Emily Burns. She recently directed Measure for Measure at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2025.
The cast
Christine Baranski and Richard E. Grant have been cast as Judith and David Bliss respectively. This will be Baranski's West End debut, while Grant is returning to the West End for the first time in twenty years.
Baranski is best known for her TV roles in The Good Fight and The Gilded Age, and has twice won a Tony Award for her rules in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing in 1984 and Neil Simon's Rumors in 1989. Grant has recently appeared in films such as The Thursday Murder Club and 100 Nights of Hero, and played the lead role in Simon Gray's Otherwise Engaged at the Criterion Theatre in 2005.
Baranski said, "I attended my first West End play as a student at Juilliard in 1971, so it's rather a dream come true to perform at Wyndham’s Theatre in a Noël Coward play in the West End," while Grant said, "I love the theatre and am thrilled to return to it, and to be directed by the illustrious Emily Burns.”
Hay Fever will run at Wyndham’s Theatre from 22 September to 12 December.
