Hay Fever in London
Starring:
Felicity Kendal
Hay Fever – Playing at the Duke of York's
It's 90 years since Noel Coward wrote this enormously funny play. Now it' been revived for the nth time by the wonderful Lindsay Posner, and it's better than ever. Wow.
This is an astonishingly durable comedy, probably because it combines the considerable talents of the playwright with the hilarious mores of the great British eccentric, perfectly observed. Add the the unique writing style that made the author so famous and you get a play that really is a piece of pure class.
When it opened at Theatre Royal Bath in summer 2014 it attracted a host of brilliant reviews. Some say it's Felicity Kendall's best role so far. And it's nice to see Lindsay Posner's revival sticking closely to the writer's original comic direction. The result is a masterpiece in situational humour and comic timing.
Hay Fever - The story
The extremely eccentric Bliss family adores dramatic outbursts – and the matriarch and ex-theatre star Judith Bliss is a master of the art of melodrama. When the family members each invite a guest for a weekend's entertainment at the family's country home – all of whom turn out to be spectacularly mis-matched - sparks fly.
The terrifyingly eccentric family proceeds to confuse, terrorise and embarrass their guests, forcing them into a variety of furtive flirtations and not-so-secret seductions. How will the guests cope? You'll have to come along and see.
According to the critics, Felicity Kendal simply lights up the stage in this role, which could have been created especially with her in mind. The antics of her and her dysfunctional family are crafted with relish, verve and style, typical Coward in their delightfully farcical nature, the very definition of ridiculous. It's a riot!
As it turns out Felicity Kendal makes a perfect Judith Bliss. And the respected actor Michael Simkins, who plays an unfortunate diplomat at the mercy of the family for the weekend, is absolutely splendid. Add Celeste Dodwell, James Corrigan and Mossie Smith and you get an unforgettable cast.
Don't miss it - this super comedy is ideal for people aged 12 upwards.

The show was great, but only one thing was a problem. At certain times during the show, it was hard to hear the actors speak. Thanks.

Hay Fever is a brilliant play that can be highly amusing. But, it is also demanding and, unless very well performed, it can fall flat. I first saw the play in 1983 (?) with Penelope Keith. It was amazing and, because I enjoyed it so much, I have seen it several times since. Each time, I have been mildly disappointed .. until the current production. It is fantastic. Very different from the '83 version, but equally amusing. One tiny point that intrigued me; during the closing scene, the family debates which road runs into the Place de la Concorde and they refer to the 'rue Boissy d'Anglais'. In fact it is no the rue Boissy d'Anglais but the 'rue Boissy d'Anglas'. I don't know whether this slip is in the original text or just in the piece as presently performed. NOT a criticism, just an observation. I happen to be aware, because I live presently in Paris .. in a péniche. I would happily see Hay Fever all over again, and several times over!

Really disappointed with this show. Found storyline boring and juvenile humour. Sad for a wasted evening for my mothers birthday - all the way from New Zealand! Was so looking forward to it. Felt actors were good but a weak storyline and low level comedy. No change 1st or 2nd half. Thankfully - a surprisingly short play considering the cost!
