Hay Fever in London

Starring:

Christine Baranski, Richard E. Grant

Noel Coward's 1925 farcical comedy of manners returns to the West End in an explosive, outrageously funny revival about an eccentric family, an English country house, and a weekend full of confusion and chaos featuring razor-sharp wit, twists and turns, and ill-fated flirtation. Don't miss this beloved and oft-revised Coward classic, with all the sly humour and cheeky satire we've come to expect from this master storyteller.

Why you should watch Hay Fever

  • It has an all-star cast, with the great Christine Baranski making her West End debut in the iconic role of Judith Bliss, playing opposite the equally talented Richard E. Grant as David Bliss.
  • Equal parts farce and comedy of manners, Hay Fever will have you in fits of laughter with its eccentric characters, razor-sharp wit, and outrageously chaotic storytelling.
  • Noel Coward was one of the greatest British playwrights of his time, beloved for his wit and flamboyance, and Hay Fever is one of his most beloved and recognisable works, which is why it's been adapted and revived over and over since 1925.

What is Hay Fever about?

Written in 1924 and premiering in the West End in 1925, Noel Coward's classic comedy follows an eccentric couple: melodramatic retired actress Judith and novelist David Bliss, and their grown children Simon and Sorel, living in an English country house. When each family member invites an unexpected and spectacularly mismatched guest to their home for the weekend, their self-centred and outlandish behaviour and penchant for melodramatic outbursts inevitably leads to chaos and hilarity. The terrifyingly outrageous family proceeds to confuse, terrorise and embarrass their guests with a variety of furtive flirtations and not-so-secret seductions.

This revival will be directed by Emily Burns (Measure for Measure, RSC), with Christine Baranski (The Gilded Age, The Good Fight) and Richard E. Grant (The Thursday Murder Club) as Judith and David Bliss. Hay Fever has been revived and adapted over and over since it was first performed, endlessly charming audiences and critics alike with its razor-sharp wit, eccentric characters, and chaotic storyline with a sly thread of social commentary running through it. It's Noel Coward at his best, with all the great playwright's unique writing style and clever takes on British eccentricism. A delightful mix of farce and comedy of manners, Hay Fever is an unmissable treat for fans of Noel Coward and newcomers alike.

Book now and don't miss this star-studded revival of a farcical comedy that has been enchanting audiences for the last century.

Great, funny and wonderful costumes.

The show was great, but only one thing was a problem. At certain times during the show, it was hard to hear the actors speak. Thanks.

Hay Fever

Hay Fever is a brilliant play that can be highly amusing. But, it is also demanding and, unless very well performed, it can fall flat. I first saw the play in 1983 (?) with Penelope Keith. It was amazing and, because I enjoyed it so much, I have seen it several times since. Each time, I have been mildly disappointed .. until the current production. It is fantastic. Very different from the '83 version, but equally amusing. One tiny point that intrigued me; during the closing scene, the family debates which road runs into the Place de la Concorde and they refer to the 'rue Boissy d'Anglais'. In fact it is no the rue Boissy d'Anglais but the 'rue Boissy d'Anglas'. I don't know whether this slip is in the original text or just in the piece as presently performed. NOT a criticism, just an observation. I happen to be aware, because I live presently in Paris .. in a péniche. I would happily see Hay Fever all over again, and several times over!

Hayfever with felicity Kendall

Really disappointed with this show. Found storyline boring and juvenile humour. Sad for a wasted evening for my mothers birthday - all the way from New Zealand! Was so looking forward to it. Felt actors were good but a weak storyline and low level comedy. No change 1st or 2nd half. Thankfully - a surprisingly short play considering the cost!
