Rumours have been flying around theatreland for months now concerning the arrival of Broadway smash-hit musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
With Kinky Boots, another Broadway export looking set to take the West End by storm very soon and with the huge success of The Book of Mormon, producers of Hedwig and the Angry Inch will be looking to catch a ride on the Broadway to West End transfer train that is quickly gathering speed.
The Tony Award winning production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch stared Neil Patrick Harris in the title role when it opened to glowing reviews in New York in April 2014. The part is now played by Taye Diggs, having recently taken over from Patrick Harris.
The cult musical tells the story of a genderqueer German rock star who has assumed a female persona after a botched sex change operation that was performed in order for him to marry a man and escape East Germany. Music and lyrics are by Stephen Trask and takes inspiration from 1970s glam rock and early punk performers such as Iggy Pop and Lou Reed.
John Cameron Mitchell, the shows writer and originator of the role of Hedwig, let slip at the Tony Awards this month that the production is currently searching for a West End home and that the creative team are actively looking for the actor to take the role of Hedwig.
