Kinky Boots – A heartwarming true story
This show has thrilled audiences and critics alike, appealing powerfully to the American psyche and their love of triumph against adversity. Now the musical is transferring to London’s grand Adelphi theatre, from August 2015.
We love the story behind the show. It begins with a classy BBC documentary about a struggling Northamptonshire shoe factory. The story caught the imagination of movie makers and, in 2005, shot the factory to an unusual level of fame in the wonderful film.
W J Brookes' real life MD Steve Pateman has never forgotten the moment he realised the TV documentary in which his factory had starred was a massive hit with viewers. In his words: "On the day it went out the BBC brought me down to London to do a couple of interviews. The next day I was on the tube rushing for my train back to Northamptonshire when a guy recognised me and leant over to talk about the programme. Soon half the carriage was on about it. That's when I knew it had gripped people."
A total of Six Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, one Drama League Award, one Drama Desk Award and one Artois Award have made the musical a legend in its own lifetime. So what's all the fuss about, and how come a thoroughly British tale proved to have such a big appeal in the USA?
The New York Times said, “Cyndi Lauper… has created a love- and heat-seeking score that performs like a pop star on Ecstasy… From their entrances, the cast members build up a bank of good vibrations.”
Time Out magazine New York called it, “The very model of a modern major musical! Irresistible, with a heart strong cast… Lauper is a musical-theater natural, combining bright, infectious melodies with simple but effective lyrics. As each act progresses, the energy rises palpably, boosted by a heart-strong cast.”
Stage And Cinema magazine says, “It’s easy to see what attracted illustrious bookwriter Harvey Fierstein, composer/lyricist Cyndi Lauper and equally accomplished director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell to this lesser known (and much darker) 2005 film of the same name. The musical is a blue-collar, Cinderella story that puts its own spin on the feel-good.”

Such a great show. I only watched the film recently and wasn’t as excited about the show as others, but I can hands down say was the best show I have seen! The dancing, singing, acting, choreography, costumes, all of it was fantastic.

Booked to see this show on advice of people who have seen it and although I did enjoy it on the whole, there were moments where I sort of lost what was going on. I saw a few children in the audience which I would not recommend as there are a couple of adult references. I am glad I saw it but there are other shows which I would rather recommend. Unfortunately I wasn't captivated by the story.

My 13 year old son and I had watched the film so were looking forward to the show. He loved it, but I found the staging disappointing. Saying that, I'm not a natural fan of musicals and it was a pleasant evening. The rest of the audience were up on their feet and cheering by the end so it might just not be my thing!

Great show with a fantastic true story. Funny, sad, energetic. Keeps you entertained with brilliant singing. This my third time seeing it. Had visitors over from Ireland first time seeing it and loved it. Will recommend this to others.

Had an absolute blast watching Kinky Boots! It was laugh out loud funny in places. The acting and singing was great and the set was very well done. My other half wasn't sure about seeing it but he really enjoyed it and was surprised ilat how much he laughed! Would definitely go see it again!

The set and the costumes are spectacular, particularly the shoes (of course!). The performance was good in general, with some flawlessly excellent performers - my undeniable favourites were the performer playing Lola, and the performer playing the worker who falls in love with Charlie at the end (ironically forgot her name, so sorry). Lola had such a strong performance, loved every gesture on stage and I personally thought they really brought up the standard of the singing and the acting of the entire musical, loved the character, loved the performer, just perfect. I cried a lot towards the end, just brilliant.

When I first saw this show, which is set in Northampton, in previews on Broadway, and then again recently in Toronto with the Canadian cast, I couldn’t help but feel that a certain Britishness was lacking in both productions...
