Truman Capote was an American novelist, screenwriter, and playwright, best known for Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood. This funny and heartbreaking one-man play presents an unflinching portrait of the artist at his breaking point, drawn entirely from Capote's own words. Set in December 1975, it follows Capote as he sits alone in his New York apartment, reflecting on his life and work in the aftermath of the publication of an unfinished scandalous memoir that alienated him from his peers and friends.
Tru was first staged in 1989, with Robert Morse originating the role of Capote, which won him a Tony Award. On Broadway, it's playing at the intimate House of the Redeemer. Rob Ashford will direct Ferguson as he reprises his critically acclaimed role in the London premiere of the play. The show features design by Paul Farnsworth.
Ferguson, who is best known for the American sitcom Modern Family, is currently playing King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium. He previously appeared in the National Theatre production of Stephen Sondheim's Here We Are. Expressing his excitement about reprising the role for London audiences, Ferguson commented, "The audience response to this unique theatrical experience, and the chance to encounter Truman Capote up close, was incredibly rewarding."
Tru will play at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 27 September to 14 November.
