The West End transfer of David Ireland's acclaimed new play has opened this month, following its premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival last year.

Directed by rising star Finn den Hertog, associate artist at National Theatre Scotland, the production stars Martin Freeman and Jack Lowden. They will be joined by Joseph Ayre (Hijack, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) and Joe Rawlinson-Hunt (The Tempest, The Ocean at the End of the Lane) , who are the understudies for the roles of Cover Luka and Cover James, respectively.

Two of the UK's most exciting acting talents will take on the funny and unflinching honest play about addiction, masculinity and faith. It all centres on the 12-step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous, where James meets newcomer Luka.

The Fifth Step will play at @sohoplace from 12 May - 26 July 2026.
