The Maids comes to the Trafalgar Studios

The Maids - Trafalgar Studios The Jamie Lloyd Company have announced the next production to join the line-up as part of the next Trafalgar Transformed season at the West End’s Trafalgar Studios - The Maids by Jean Genet will open on the 20 February and run through to the 21 May 2016.

Directed by Jamie Lloyd, The Maids has not been seen on the London stage for over 20 years. Benedict Andrews and Andrew Upton adapt this version of Genet’s classic play.

The cast for The Maids includes the double Emmy Award-winning Uzo Abuba from hit series Orange is the New Black, Downton Abbey star Laura Carmichael and Zawe Ashton from BBC 3’s popular series Fresh Meat.

The Maids is a psychological thriller played out in a luxurious bedroom where two maids fantasise about killing their employer. A penetrating look at the class system and a provocative exploration of sexuality, the production promises to be an intense theatrical ride.

On the announcement of the production Uzo Aduba said, ‘I wanted to be a part of The Jamie Lloyd Company because they're interested in doing exciting work. Jamie reinvents classic plays in a way that we've never seen before or have explored before. To be part of a play that allows for three women to mine such complex characters inside of an already rich and thrilling story, is the stuff that acting dreams are made of’.

This contemporary adaptation of The Maids will also feature set design by Jamie Lloyd’s long-time collaborator Soutra Gilmour.
