My Master Builder in London

Starring:

Ewan McGregor

He's back! Hollywood star Ewan McGregor returns to the West End stage with a brilliant new play My Master Builder, directed by the multi award-winner Michael Grandage. Prepare for big drama inspired by the work of Henrik Ibsen, one of theatre's best-loved, world-class playwrights.

My Master Builder the story

The action is set in a posh mansion in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York, a popular seaside resort for the rich and influential. It's the 4th of July and Elena Solness, a publishing magnate, is holding a party to celebrate her architect husband Henry's latest masterpiece. The couple is already in trouble but when Mathilde, a former student of Henry’s, turns up out of the blue, things quickly get complicated. Henry once had an affair with the girl and as the evening unfolds he and his wife are forced to face a reckoning that changes their lives. This startling new play reveals the vulnerabilities we expose when we allow ourselves to love.

About My Master Builder

The drama comes from the pen of the US screenwriter and playwright Lila Raicek, inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama of almost the same name, The Master Builder. She is also a writer, with a debut thriller novel The Plunge published by Harper Collins in the summer 2025.

As well as a multitude of TV work, Raicek has a long and interesting list of plays behind her including Fire Season, which was inspired by Shakespeare's Measure for Measure and whose workshop stage starred Billy Crudup. She wrote Tulla, a play about the artist Edvard Munch, and Vertebrae, which netted her an Araca Group Graduate Playwriting Award, plus Love Lab, Night Float, Monkey Bowl, Blood Moon and more.

My Master Builder cast and creatives

My Master Builder is directed by theatre royalty Michael Grandage (Disney’s Frozen, Orlando, My Policeman), who reunites with Ewan McGregor after working together on Othello and Guys and Dolls at the Donmar Warehouse. This is McGregor's first time on stage in 17 years, having delighted audiences in theatre, on TV and in movies in a multitude of varied roles. His work includes Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, Star Wars, A Gentleman in Moscow, Fargo, Halston, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Jerusalem – City of Faith and Fury.

The Set and costume design is by Richard Kent, the composer and sound designer is Adam Cork, and the play is produced by the Michael Grandage Company with MarketStall and Seaview Productions.

Disappointing

Some really good acting ( particularly Kate Fleetwood ) but too much of the script is very "theatrical. darling'.

Disappointing

We came a long way to see the play and left bitterly disappointed . It’s so obviously in its infancy- stilted, no chemistry, unnecessary words: who says ‘abscond’?!, trying too hard, hated the American accents. The only good part was Kate Fleetwood. She was the only enjoyable part.
