Wonder.Land in London

A new musical inspired by Lewis Carroll’s iconic Alice in Wonderland, by Damon Albarn and Moira Buffini.

Welcome to Wonder.Land, where you can be exactly who you want to be.

Aly, 12, loves this extraordinary virtual world. Bullied at school and unhappy at home, Wonder.Land offers an escape.

Online, Aly becomes Alice: brave, beautiful and in control. But some of the people she meets – the weird Dum and Dee, the creepy Cheshire Cat, the terrifying Red Queen – seem strangely familiar. And as hard as Aly tries to keep them apart, real life and wonder.land begin to collide in ever more curious and dangerous ways.

Wonder.Land - National Theatre I’m a huge fan of theatre productions that add a modern twist to well-known stories, making them more relevant to modern audiences. WONDER.LAND, the National Theatre’s collaboration with Daman Albarn (from the 90’s pop group Blur) could be one of these productions, however Lewis Carroll’s original Victorian tale of a girl discovering marvels beneath a rabbit hole barely survives in this digital oriented spectacle.

Review: WONDER.LAND at the National Theatre

Wonder.Land Older audiences and critics were rather underwhelmed by this massive new show, inspired by the classic children’s book ALICE IN WONDERLAND, when it premièred in Manchester earlier this year. It has now transferred to London's Oliver Theatre and if the enthusiasm of the younger audience members at the late preview I attended is anything to go by, it could prove a massive hit if it can reach the urban teenage audience it’s aimed at.
