Abigail's Party in London
Starring:
Tamzin Outhwaite, Kevin Bishop
Delighting audiences since 1977, Mike Leigh's hilarious and darkly witty comedy of manners returns in a sparkling new revival at the Noel Coward Theatre. Get ready for eccentric characters, witty banter, and the most disastrous party in Essex.
Why you should see Abigail's Party
- It features a talented and star-studded cast, including television and stage actress Tamzin Outhwaite (EastEnders) and comedian, actor, and writer Kevin Bishop (The Kevin Bishop Show).
- It packs sitcom-style humour with a sly commentary about the British middle class that will leave you in peals of laughter.
- Abigail's Party has been revived countless times and even adapted for television - clearly it's stood the test of time when it comes to charming audiences and feeling relevant.
What is Abigail's Party about?
Mike Leigh's ferocious black comedy of suburban life, social class, materialism and sexual tension is set in Essex in 1977. Queen of the suburbs Beverly and her husband Laurence invite their new neighbours Angela and Tony over for drinks, along with Sue from next door, while Sue's teenage daughter Abigail throws a party at home. Awkward small talk between virtual strangers quickly turns into inappropriate flirtations and marital disputes as the drinks start flowing, and the party turns into a soiree from hell with no escape in sight.
Abigail's Party, which premiered at London's Hampstead Theatre in 1977 and has been repeatedly revived since, even inspiring a television adaptation, is a comedy of manners that satirises the new British middle class that emerged in the 1970s, but feels every bit as funny today. This revival is directed by Nadia Falls, currently the Artistic Director of the Young Vic. Television and stage actress Tamzin Outhwaite (EastEnders, Red Cap, Hotel Babylon, New Tricks) plays Beverly, one of the most iconic characters in British theatre. She is joined by comedian, actor, and writer Kevin Bishop (The Kevin Bishop Show, Muppet Treasure Island) as Laurence. A sly commentary on class relations with a sharp-edged wit, Abigail's Party is an unmissable comedy that has stood the test of time.
Book now and don't miss your chance to party with this eccentric cast of characters.

A fantastic interpretation of a beloved classicTamsin Outhwaite was brilliant in the role of Beverley - I didn't stop laughing from start to finish! The costumes, hair and make-up were spot on, as was the set and the music that was playing when the audience arrived really set the mood.

Top up, Tone?Tamzin Outhwaite commanded the stage with just the right amount of subtle menace balancing Beverley's vacuity. A must for Mike Leigh fans, and anyone born in the 1970s.

Solid Lightweight EntertainmentFor those of us who remember the original Play For Today it is a lovely trip down memory lane and Tamsin Outhwaite commands the centre stage with all of the wit and panache of a seasoned professional. A bit heavy on the slapstick towards the end and I would have preferred to see more of the simmering tension between husband and wife handled with a greater degree of subtlety which would have served to emphasise the dramatic ending with more impact.

Relatively funnyAbigail’s Party was good and relatively funny, although I wouldn’t say it was laugh-out-loud hilarious. I felt the characters could have exaggerated their personalities a little more to make the comedy stronger. For example, Beverly could have been more openly flirtatious from the very beginning, while Angela could have been portrayed as more of a submissive wife and Tony as more controlling. I also think the contrast between Beverly and Laurence could have been made more obvious. For instance, Laurence could have spoken and behaved in a more distinctly “posh” manner, which would have heightened the difference between the two characters. I’m also not entirely sure why Abigail’s party itself was so central to the play, as Abigail never actually appeared. Overall, I felt that the play lacked a certain depth and could have pushed the characters and their relationships further.

Abigail’s PartyIt was my first time at the Theatre Royal , Stratford and I was charmed straight away by the size, decor and period features. I had seen the play before back in the seventies with Alison Steadman so it was a hard act to follow. I needn’t have worried though as Beverley was depicted brilliantly- a very funny play, full of sexual tension. I LOVED it!
