Angel's Bone - English National Opera in London
Two angels fall to earth. Heaven help them. Mr and Mrs X.E. are a couple facing financial difficulties and a failing marriage, desperately longing for a better life. When they find two bruised, battered angels in their garden, they bring them inside to nurse them back to health, but care quickly turns to control. They brutally clip the angels' wings, subjecting them to degrading, inhumane treatment in an effort to exploit their heavenly gifts to pursue their own goals of fame and fortune.
This dark, unsettling parable comes from contemporary Chinese-American composer, performance artist and activist Du Yun and librettist Royce Vavrek. Yun won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Angel's Bone, which shatters operatic traditions to fuse multiple musical genres, spoken word and immersive staging. Yun's eclectic style that ranges from chamber music and cabaret to electronica and punk, Vavrek's eerie libretto, and director Kip Williams' dynamic staging that uses projection and multiple viewing angles to immerse audiences in the story all come together to tell this harrowing story of modern slavery and human trafficking.
