Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo in London
In this darkly comic and surreal play by Rajiv Joseph, a tiger haunts the streets of war-torn Baghdad in the aftermath of the fall of Saddam Hussain’s regime. Two American marines and an Iraqi translator encounter this mysterious creature as it searches for meaning and redemption among the horrors and absurdities of war.
Written by master storyteller Rajiv Joseph (Guards at the Taj), Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo first opened on Broadway in 2011 with a sold-out run starring Robin Williams in his final Broadway performance. The Hollywood Reporter called it “dark and disturbing but also corrosively funny”. Now it will have its highly anticipated European premiere at the Young Vic, directed by Omar Elerian (Rhinoceros).
This darkly witty tragicomedy, memorably featuring a fast-talking, foul-mouthed tiger navigating the aftermath of a war in a city gone to hell, is a searing exploration of the Iraq War that still feels harrowingly relevant today. Exploring themes of violence and trauma through a vibrant cast of characters and poignant storytelling, this unique and powerful play comes to the West End for the first time this autumn.
