David Walliams is a very funny man. He's an exceptional writer too, and kids adore his hilarious books. In 2017 the Birmingham Stage Company scored a hit with his brilliant story Gangsta Granny, based on the best selling book. Now they're back at the Garrick Theatre with another Walliams classic, Billionaire Boy. This cool stage musical adaptation premiered lyrics by Miranda Cooper, along with her songwriting partner Nick Cole, and it's simply fantastic!

What's the plot of Billionaire Boy?

Meet twelve year old Joe Spud. He is the country's richest boy. He owns a sports car, and keeps two crocodiles as pets. His pocket money is an astounding £100,000 every week. It looks a lot like a recipe for pure happiness, but Joe doesn't have a single, solitary friend. He's a very lonely boy.

When Joe decides to leave his posh school and start life afresh at his local comprehensive, his plans quickly fall apart. Who knew there were so many things in life that you can't buy, and they just happen to be the best bits of all?

Joe's life quickly becomes a roller-coaster as he discovers what money can't buy, and the results are hilarious. There's a valuable lesson to be learned about what really matters, a lesson that means more than ever in a covid world. What a wonderful story, adapted for BBC TV in 2016 and well on its way to becoming a children's classic.
