Daytona in London

Daytona – A strictly limited 8 week run

The well-loved actress Maureen Lipman stars with Harry Shearer and the playwright himself, the multi-talented writer and actor Oliver Cotton, for the West End transfer of a play that's making serious waves in the marvellous world of the theatre. You have a strictly limited eight week window in which to catch this remarkable new play, so get your skates on to witness the birth of a future stage classic.

Daytona is directed by David Grindley, a play that caused such a positive stir after its world première at London’s Park Theatre in 2013 that its transfer to the West End was more or less inevitable. It's also special because it marks the Theatre Royal Haymarket’s first ever collaboration with an off-West End theatre venue. It's mysterious, gripping and beautifully portrayed, a story with two powerful love stories at its core.

This is Maureen Lipman's first time at the splendid Theatre Royal Haymarket and she takes to the stage with gusto, the latest in a stellar stage and TV career that includes When We Are Married at the Garrick, A Little Night Music at the Menier Chocolate Factory and Aladdin at the Old Vic.

The character Joe is played by equally multi-talented Harry Shearer, someone whose voice is just as well known as he is in person. He's one of the famous voices behind The Simpsons, and this is his West End début. Exciting stuff. If you love The Simpsons' Mr Burns, Principle Skinner and Ned Flanders characters, you'll realise what a treat you have in store. Shearer co-wrote, created and starred in the 1984 mockumentary Spinal Tap, one of the funniest mickey-takes in the known universe. He has also appeared in a bunch of popular movies including The Fisher King, Godzilla and The Truman Show.

The playwright Oliver Cotton’s credentials are equally impressive. He's the writer of Wet Weather Cover, The Incredible Journey of Sir Francis Young, The Enoch Show, Scrabble and Man Falling Down. And he has TV credits too, including the highly popular A Touch of Frost and Diamond Geezer.

Daytona - The story

Set in 1986, in New York city, it's all about the ballroom dancers and long-time partners Joe and Elli, who have loved one another for fifty years despite a fiery relationship where bickering is the name of the game. All is well until, out of the blue, Joe's long-lost brother Billy crashes back into their lives with an unbelievable story to tell. We won't say any more... grab your tickets right now and you'll find out soon enough!

Disappointed of Ealing

Bad script, acting not great apart from Maureen Lipman

Serious content delivered with humour.

Good storyline with a twist and tackled several issues that left you to answer yourself and your reactions. Superbly acted added to the enjoyment and suspense.

Just a Blast from the Past

All the warring/warmth of a Jewish family; a middle-aged couple brought face to face with an all-but forgotten past by the re-appearance of a troubled sibling/ex-lover. Only when Billy's wild story hits the headlines to confirm him on the run brought an old life and all its pains and unfulfilled promises impinging on the couple's settled existence. Roaring Oliver Cotton's writing was better than his performance on the night - several important words were lost in over-projection - shouting. We always enjoy Maureen Lipman but my wife after a hard hot day's coaching at a university proved too tired to comprehend Oliver's accent so largely missed the point of the play.Disappointed for her but I'm glad we came!

Two days after the show

The more I think of Daytona the more I like it. The eternal question whether it is ever right to take justice in your own hands with all its consequences, should you decide to do that, is what intrigued me most. Also, the message that even if the love of your life is not meant to be, it is still possible to go on and have a life rather than remain stuck in the past. And, of course, loyalty to one's family, rain or shine.

Surprising storyline

With only 3 characters each one gets to take centre stage for their own monlogue/story. Each one is heartfelt, moving and intense but also brilliantly acted The twist in the storyline was unexpected and the performance we saw had a mistake which was superbly covered with ad libs and clever acting
