Deep Azure - Globe in London
When her fiance, Deep, is killed by the police, Azure, a young black woman with an eating disorder, finds her world falling apart. Their friends, Roshad and Tone, deeply influenced by the spiritual imprint Deep left on everyone he met, do their best to find peace and meaning in the wake of this senseless tragedy. But the Heavenly MCs of Street Knowledge have other plans for them. This cathartic and lyrical epic is inspired by the true story of university student Prince Jones, influenced by the poetry of Shakespeare and powered by the pulse of Hip-Hop theatre, making it a truly one-of-a-kind and unique theatrical experience.
Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu (For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy, Pig Heart Boy) makes his Globe directorial debut to bring to life this powerful, harrowing new play by the late Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated actor and writer Chadwick Boseman, in its highly anticipated UK premiere. An unflinching look at violence, racism, and police brutality that feels painfully resonant today, Deep Azure is written in breath-taking lyrical verse and loosely based on the murder of Prince Jones by a police officer. It first opened in Chicago in 2000, and was nominated for a 2006 Jeff Award for Best New Work, and now, British audiences will finally get to experience this masterful story.
