Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in London

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels – Hilarious, vibrant, witty and fun

Robert Lindsay last played in a musical in the 1990s, when his role as Fagin in Oliver won him a well-deserved Olivier award back in 1997. In his words, "I have been waiting for the right musical to cross my path and feel like I have finally found it." Rufus Hound, a popular comedian and also a damn fine actor, plays opposite Lindsay as the irrepressible Freddy Benson, fresh from his role in One Man, Two Guvnors. In Hound’s words, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is "faithful enough for fans of the movie" as well as "anchored in good, old-fashioned comedy".

Some stories are so good they never die. And this is one of them. The 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was an equally big hit, with Sir Michael Caine and Steve Martin, but was itself inspired by an earlier piece of work, the 1964 comedy film Bedtime Story starring the wonderful David Niven and Marlon Brando in the leading roles.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - The story

What can you expect? First, an hilarious script. Second, highly entertaining musical numbers. Third, a remarkably talented cast, director and creative team. And fourth, a simple but brilliant story. This “devilishly cheeky, fun-filled Broadway musical” takes an intimate and very funny look at two hapless con men plying their wicked trade on the glittering French Riviera. You’ll adore the suave, sophisticated and seriously successful Lawrence Jameson, played by Lindsay, and the small-time crook Freddy Benson, played by Hound. What a team!

What the papers say

As the Sydney Morning Herald says, “David Yazbeck's penned the wittiest lyrics to grace a musical since the likes of Cole Porter, Alan Jay Lerner or Stephen Sondheim were in their pomp. His words bounce and writhe on his own tunes, which, in turn, occasionally remind one of Porter or early Sondheim.” High praise indeed, joined by a rave review from Broadway World, which says, “The show has you laughing from beginning to end as the two con men compete to steal the spotlight both in the show and in reality.” And Limelight magazine has the final word, saying, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels the musical is witty, brisk and full of madcap slapstick antics that escalate beautifully in the tradition of farce.

Robert Lindsay is superb, the show is light-hearted and involves the audience. A real piece of escapism but the sting in the tail is the bar. The drinks were exorbitantly priced and the lack of seating or space was a real shame.

Not for Children

Parts were extremely smutty and gratuitous to the story. Quite unsuitable for children and there were quite a few in the matinee audience. Frankly I was quite disappointed at this and not what I expected from reviews I had read. Most of the audience where I was seated seemed to hold the same view. However, the costumes were colourful, the staging good and the dancing very entertaining. Bonnie Langford was by far the best of the 3 main women characters, in my view.

This show portrays a myriad of stereotypical rich and famous characters who are charmed by an attractive con-artist. Just when they think they've hooked their biggest catch it ends with a twist.

Great Show

Went to the show with my husband and parents and loved it, made me laugh out loud. The only downside was that Robert Lindsay should have been in the lead role which is the main reason for buying tickets for this particular show, however he was absent and it was his understudy who took the lead, which was a little disappointing. However, I must say that his understudy was really good in the role and I still thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

I have seen two performances of this show in the las t couple of years in Melbourne and Sydney and enjoyed both very much. I was disappointed in the London production. I felt the cast could have fine better and got the impression that the two male leads were simply going through their paces of a familiar routine rather than giving their all to the audience. I love this show and left the theatre feeling very let down. I would not recommend this production to anyone.
