Falstaff in London
Experience Falstaff, Verdi’s wonderful comic opera
Giuseppe Verdi only wrote two comedies and this is the third opera he based on Shakespeare’s works, the others being Macbeth and Otello. Falstaff is one of the world’s greatest comic operas and Verdi’s last, written when he was eighty years old. Set in the reign of Henry IV, who was in power between 1399 and 1413, the scene is Windsor, England. It’s an opera in three acts, adapted by Arrigo Boito from the Shakespeare plays The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV.
Falstaff - The story
Greedy, amoral knight Sir John Falstaff is broke. But his attempts at wooing two wealthy widows, with the aim of taking ownership of their husbands’ money, are soon thwarted as the women hatch a cunning plot designed to deliver revenge. It’s a fast-paced romp, wonderfully witty and action-packed, a hilarious study in the darker side of human behaviour. You’ll revel in the jealousy and intrigue, confusion and chaos, all set to a beautifully inventive musical score. Falstaff is a wonderful way to experience all the colour and character of opera at its best, an altogether excellent night out.
Falstaff the opera - Entertaining audiences since 1893
This time around, Verdi's last masterpiece is given a lavish, stylish facelift as Shakespeare’s portly hero takes the stage, larger than life and just as entertaining as he was in the first performance of the opera at La Scala, Milan, way back in February 1893. It’s an enduringly popular tale that’s drawing enthusiastic international audiences every night. Verdi himself described Falstaff as an amusing rogue, and the sense of fun he instilled into the tale shines through more than a century after the great man’s death.
A new production in association with La Scala and the Canadian Opera co.
Directed by Robert Carsen, this is a brand new production created in collaboration with La Scala, Milan and the prestigious Canadian Opera Company, with conductor Daniele Gatti taking the podium at London’s Royal Opera House. You’ll laugh with delight at the antics of Sir John Falstaff and his henchmen Bardolfo and Pistola, Mr Fenton, Mr Ford and his wife Alice, their daughter Nannetta, Mistress Quickly the innkeeper, physician Doctor Caius and Meg Page, Alice Ford's friend.
