Fortune's Fool in London

Fortune’s Fool – Turgenev at his very best

Directed by Lucy Bailey, Turgenev's richly funny 1800s satire of Russian society was newly adapted by the seriously talented Mike Poulton in 2002. The press have called it an “explosive family drama played out over the course of 24 hours” and it’s guaranteed to delight, thrill and amuse West End audiences.

Fortune’s Fool - The story

Written by the respected Russian Ivan Turgenev in the mid-1800s, the action takes place over a 24 hour period, covering a pair of newlyweds’ return to their country estate, where the machinations of the unfortunate and foolish Kuzovkin, their gentleman-in-residence, who hasn’t a penny to his name, ultimately cause chaos.

When their rich neighbour Tropatchov calls round to help the couple celebrate, joining them for a sumptuous lunch, the demon drink takes its toll. The result? A shocking revelation with profound ramifications that’ll change their lives forever.

Another masterpiece in the making from director Lucy Bailey.

Director Lucy Bailey has an impressive portfolio, recently responsible for the highly acclaimed production of King Lear at the Theatre Royal, Bath. She also directed The Winter's Tale, The Taming of the Shrew and Julius Caesar for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Beggar's Opera at Regent’s Park’s popular Open Air Theatre. Plus Macbeth, Timon of Athens, Titus Andronicus, As You Like It and The Maid's Tragedy, all on stage at Shakespeare's Globe theatre on the bank of the Thames. With a pedigree like this, you can expect great things from this long-awaited production of a much-loved play.

Turgenev’s masterpiece won several awards for its 2002 Broadway run including two Tony awards and one Tony nomination, plus two Drama Desk Awards. Add a crack creative team including designer William Dudley, lighting expert Bruno Poet, composer John Eacott, sound guru Mic Pool and the respected casting professional Sarah Bird, and Fortune’s Fool looks very good indeed.
